Clarification of Music Theory Basics: Intervals Workbook
I don't know if this is the right place for this. I am going through the Music Theory Basics course and am confused on something in the workbook for section V, Intervals. On the page labeled 27, it states "The second time we say “to you” in Happy Birthday, we leap a fifth from scale degree 5 to 2". The score shows going from a G to an F in the F major scale. How is that a fifth and how is it going from scale degree 5 to 2?

yes, so your book is just a little unclear and doesn't identify the specific syllables they are talking about . they say the second time you say "happy birthday", which would be measure 3 by my reckoning (treating the opening "Happy" as a pickup and measure 1 as commencing on "birthday"). In the key of F, "day" in measure 3 would be a C and "to" would be a G -- and there is your leap of a 5th.
