Week 4: Share your Recording!

We’ve arrived at the final week of the Lisztomaniac Challenge!

Over the past few weeks, you chose a piece, took your first steps, and started shaping the music. Now it’s time to share where the journey has taken you.

This week, we’d love for you to post a recording of your Liszt piece or excerpt.

It does not need to be perfect. It does not need to be polished. It does not need to be the final version you’ll ever play.

A short excerpt, a work-in-progress, or a full performance are all welcome.

This week here are some things that you can share!

  • Your final challenge recording
  • A short excerpt or work-in-progress clip
  • What you worked on during the challenge
  • Something you discovered about Liszt’s music
  • Something you’re proud of!

Whether you spent the month with a Consolation, a transcription, a Hungarian Rhapsody, a piece from Years of Pilgrimage, a Transcendental Étude, or just a few meaningful measures, thank you for being part of this challenge.

We can’t wait to hear everyone’s Liszt!

Here is my little "work in process" excerpt of La Campanella. It's actually quite fun to play, so looking forward to go deeper into this and play the whole thing later.

PS: The Chasse-neige has been looked into just enough to get a feel of the difficulties and what needs to be done before October-party.

Looking forward to hear everyone!  ☺️🎹

very impressive, and a beautiful, silvery sound! That piece is just one challenge after another, and you’re mastering all of them admirably.

Thanks so much, Alexander! It’s only a start, so look forward to refine this technique further and learn the rest :)

Though you said it's only a start, I find it very remarkable and inspiring. Bravo, Sindre!

    Liszt etude S.136-2

Earlier in the challenge, I decided not to participate because of health reasons. Summer holiday from work and having less stress helps a lot. So, this is the video, and the result so far. Thank you for listening.

How good to hear that you’re feeling better! I have to admit that I do not know this etude at all. I admire you all for choosing these challenging etudes. A big bravo 👏

Chasse-Neige will be split between no less than FIVE people! That one will be truly epic.

P.S. If that’s cognitive decline, Noel you mention, then may we all deteriorate so spectacularly. Sign me up.

Oh and here's my Transcendental Etude no.1. You've already seen this, I'm just posting it here for Dominic to include it to the watch party. No time for my new version nor for Fusées, that will be for the October challenge!😅

You bet! Alex and I probably have the energy (and slightly delusional brazenness) to play a half each, but we're planning to have more pianists join us, namely Mark, Sindre, and Maria! That will be quite a Finale for the October Challenge.

Some afterthoughts. (Alert: wall of text incoming)

Again I want to thank you all for sharing my enthusiasm in this project. It started as a very personal project, from my insecurities about aging and losing my cognitive abilities (slowly, just normal for my age!), a goodbye to the extremely virtuosic music that will always be my favorite to play. At some point during this challenge I felt bad for dragging everyone into this. When I started this I thought it would be fun to start this exuberant project featuring a group of amateurs playing all the Transcendental Etudes. But then I started regretting it as I struggled to play the pieces to my liking😅. So thanks again everyone and let's finish off this project in October!

Hi Noel , just checking in about part 2 of the Liszt challenge.

I haven’t seen any announcement about it or any entry in the calendar

I assume it’s still going ahead , do you know any more ?

      cheers

Hi Mark, it will happen, 100% sure, whether officially or not!  , please?😊

Liszt's birthday is Oct.22nd, so let's try to submit the recordings before that!🙏

for some reason,, I had October 31 in my mind as the end of the second part of this Challenge (i.e., as the anticipated date of the second Watch Party). October 24 (or, worse, 22) will be very challenging for me with everything else on my plate. I will do what I can.

Actually I'd prefer Oct 31st myself!

And friends, it's ok if you can't make it. I think in that case I'd probably record snippets from the missing pieces, for completionist purposes.

you must be the only pianist on Tonebase who is able to learn and record on short notice whichever Transcendental Étude is missing from a project to play the complete set. 🤣
