Interm-Adv Books

Any suggestions on books on the topic of how to practice and improve on piano for the intermediate to advanced players? Also, any must have exercise books? I keep hearing Hannon is no longer the popular current day approach and maybe even causes injuries. I want to take myself from intermediate to advanced level.

    Hi Zak,

I recently watched a video on Tonebase about how to practice, and it gave me a lot of good ideas.  It was led by Chelsea Tanner, and I think it came out in June 2024.  In that video, she mentioned a book that has helped her a lot in her (flute) teaching and practice:  Intelligent Music Teaching by Robert Duke, who is Head of Music and Human Learning at The University of Texas at Austin.  I've requested that book from my library, and I look forward to reading it.

Also, a year or so ago, I got a book on piano exercises by Neil Stannard, which is a collection of graduated excerpts from classical pieces that he turned into exercises.  I like his idea of using actual pieces to create exercises, instead of something like Hanon.

If you get either book, let me know what you think.

    Best,

    Jenny
