Tonebase Bach Stage

This thread is dedicated to J.S. Bach keyboard music. We would like to renew the inspiring spirit of the old thread "Group-Journey through J.S. Bach" based on the inventions and extend to the entire Bach repertoire: inventions, preludes, fugues, toccatas, dances of the Suites and Partitas...

This is for everyone who wants to join!

We can enjoy Bach music together and motivate each other in the process of learning and practicing it!

"I begin every day with Bach - usually for about an hour. I used to torture myself with Czerny, which of course wasn't exactly stimulating for the mind. On the other hand, it teaches you the fingering for a B flat major scale, chromatic thirds, and so on. The daily grind of learning. Later, I discovered that I could get my 'training' under way better with Bach - a refreshment for the body, soul and spirit". (András Schiff, Music Comes Out of Silence, p. 21)

Hello everyone, I am working on the Toccata No 6, BWV 830. Today, I made a first recording of the Toccata. Still work in progress!

Has anyone of you played this piece? Which pianist do you recommend as reference?

I’ve listened to (among others) Andras Schiff, and I’ve also done the Tonebase lessons dedicated to this Toccata.

Excellent job, and your piano is beautiful! Which model is it?

Also, András Schiff is generally my reference for Bach. By the way, I made a list of my favorite pianist and composer combinations, for that purpose. If anyone would find it helpful, I can post it.

      It’s a Bösendorfer 214 🤩

thank you so much for your kind words. It was also on my bucket list since many years. And last September I decided to finally go for it.  I always find it difficult to learn a piece by Bach. In this Toccata, Bach uses the sigh motif in the opening and in the fugue. However the character of the opening and ending section are so different from the fugue that it is a real challenge to achieve unity. At least for me.

thank you so much for your advice. Yes, I will definitely continue working on this piece. I want to learn the whole Partita and then play it in a concert. This is going to take me quite a long time. But I am dedicated to go for it 😀

That is what I was going to guess! Are you playing a historic piano in your profile picture?

yes, that was at a piano store in Paris. They had just finished an old Pleyel. So beautiful 🤩. It felt like silk and cashmere when playing it 🥰

That is incredible! When was it made? I want to play a historic Pleyel some time! Also, out of curiosity, which piano brand/which piano that you have played is your second favorite?

I don’t remember. I guess it was early 20th century. Personally, I am a huge Bösendorfer fan. I think all the big brands like Steinway, Fazioli, Bechstein, Kawai and Yamaha are producing excellent grand pianos in the top range. At the end, if you have the chance to handpick your instrument, the brand is not the important thing, it is more about what kind of sound and character in tone you as a pianist are looking for.

I agree with you. Have you ever played a Seiler?

What a piano! That’s a dream right there.

If only I could own a Bosie, sigh. Maybe I can talk my wife into a grand, at the least. A piano makes a house a home.

There is a Robert Frost poem entitled “The Investment” that is about the purchase of a piano.

      Nice playing!

Lovely, and I like the camera angle.

Can't wait to see how you will solve the Gigue! I could never make sense of its rhythm. Will you play the rhythm as written (e.g., Perahia), or make it more gigue-like by turning it into crotchet-quaver triplets (e.g., Schiff)?

thank you. I still need some time before getting to the Gigue. I’ve started learning the Air a few days ago 😂

Beautifully sung, Ursina! You shaped the melodies in long, expressive arcs with great sensitivity. Thank you for sharing it and a big Bravo!

thank you so much for your kind words. I tried to capture the dance style of an Allemande when playing. It really helps me a lot to watch how these baroque dances used to be performed.
