What a wonderful concert today! We had to leave after the live section, so I'm making my way through all the recordings.

Here's a recording of the Schubert Thurmond and I performed today in case anyone missed it and wants to listen (tempo was a bit quicker than we had practiced: the joys of live performance, and something I need to become accustomed to).

that's just beautiful Michelle, thanks a lot for posting it.  a lovely, sincere and  heartfelt performance of Schubert at his most tuneful and in his element. Must also be so nice to have such a copasetic accompanist right there in-house.!

I enjoyed all the performances at yesterday's community concert - and extra kudos to all the brave live performers  -  I applaud your courage.

I tried to submit some Poulenc as an mp4 file - but it wouldn't play for everyone.  I did this because YouTube would not let me share a link  -  the work is not yet public domain so it was flagged as a copyright issue.

So in case anyone might still care to listen, here it is again via Google Drive links (I hope this works!):

    POULENC, Novelette #1

    https://drive.google.com/file/d/1x9sa8CYkxRNSDiRaydzQmmE9bMjBQneB/view?usp=drive_link

    RAVEL, Rigadoun  - excerpt

    https://drive.google.com/file/d/1KUJ17E8ZkmoqsNqohJ3l7c0u2zlcSg_1/view?usp=drive_link

The Rigadoun is just an excerpt - which I include mainly for the fingering.  After hitting wrong notes for years I finally figured out a fingering that avoids crossing the hands and figured I'd share  (pdf attached).  Still a tricky piece but makes it a little easier anyway.

Poulenc is a real favorite of mine - lots of accessible music for the pianist & listener.    And if you are inclined to hear more, here’s a video of Poulenc himself playing his own double piano concerto:

I concur Tom, great playing of these pieces.  Like others, I had never heard the Poulenc and it makes me want to search out more of his music.

Don't know whether anyone is still checking this thread a week later. But anyway I was so aggravated with myself for losing my way during my performance, that I made myself stay after school in order to make a recording of the Prelude and Fugue that did not collapse mid-performance.  It took 4 takes, with several false starts , but I finally got through it from start to finish.

    Here it is:

    https://youtu.be/YkJv4PeLYlc

Being able to get through it on a recording still does not mean it's ready for live performance, as we learned. But I am grateful for the opportunity to give it a try during our community concert, and I thank you all for listening and for your kind and encouraging words.

Great job on this Peter. You have clearly worked on it carefully and have great clarity and energy. It is easy to follow your subjects in the fugue and I like the little additions you made. I enjoyed your recital performance but hats off to you for following it up with this recording =)

Thank you so much for sharing this wonderful performance, Peter. Recording is difficult because one looks for that perfection, but after recording several times, you feel more secure for  live performance. 😍

That was pretty awesome.  Those preludes and fugues are much harder than they look - great job bringing out all the voices (and some nifty filmwork too!).

Hey Peter, thank you for the feed back. For now this is "finished" enough for me to turn my attention back to our "Unfinished Business" challenge, which I have not done much with except for enrolling.  But I will be following your Mozart concerto over there with great interest!

OMG!! I am so so far away from the levels that I have seen here - your comment about my concerto project sends shivers down my 60+ yr old spine. lol!.. But today is my day off from work so I practised about 2 hours before lunch.. The first 5 pages

      1. - slow tempo at 70 bpm to the quarter .. then

      2. Moved to 108 pbm and played along with Christoph Eshchenbach's recording - following closely.. not too terrible I thought.. but would I play with anyone else around - I think not . lol!.  Will do a recording during the night session.. or next 3 days of holidays.. lol!  Your playing of WTC is wonderful.. Thank you again.

If you do get interested in this wonderful concerto it would be great to hear you play it - I am sure I will find a 100 things to improve in my playing..but I have been on this journey for quite long and continue nevertheless -finding new aspects to improve on- sometimes just a few lines..

Dustin, thank you very much for listening and offering your feedback.  Since studying more about the baroque era (thanks largely to some great ToneBase offerings) I've felt a little freeer in adding ornaments here and there, as I have come to understand that many of these Preludes might resemble how a player skilled in Partimento (other-worldly super-skilled in JSB's case) might improvise on the various motifs and chord/voice leading patterns.  Some of my ornaments are there just because they fit under the fingers, but generally I' aspire to a more musical rationale than that.

Hey Peter, the last thing you would need to worry about is what level others on this site are at. We're all striving for perfection and none of us is so close that we can afford to stop practicing.  Our community concerts and challenges feature all different levels, and the music finds a way to speak through each us despite our imperfections.

You could do a lot worse than to "play along with Christoph" as you try to learn this piece. You'll likely pick up subtleties and nuances by imitation that you won't find on your printed page.  It reminds me of my childhood, where I would play my mother's "Sing Along with Mitch" records [a series put out by the producer Mitch Miller in the early 1960's featuring a chorus singing some very old tin pan alley standards.] .. I would play along with them, gradually picking out the tunes, which became some of the very first songs I learned to play by ear.

My all time favorite Mozart Concerto is the C Minor No. 24 K. 491, which I did learn the notes to about a half century ago.  I never got to play it with an orchestra, nor did I master it to the point where I could have.  But back then we had these awkward "Music Minus One" records for concertos. You'd set it up on the record player, run over to the piano, hopefully before the tutti had stopped, and then play along, It worked OK until you got to the cadenza, which was simply a very long period of silence which aburptly ended with 4 loud clicks whereupon the orchestra came barging back in regardless of where you were in your cadenza.
