FAQ for "Mozart & Haydn - Music from the 18th Century!"

Welcome to the 18th Century!

What do we know about the music written during the Galant style, or better… during the 18th century?

Most of the time, the music for keyboard instruments written during the 18th century is defined as simple, pleasing, and overall superficial. And yet, the works written during this period contain the seeds for the development of larger musical forms.

”Galant” described elegance, culture, and virtue. During this month we will discover how musical works were somewhat built according to a specific code in order to please the listeners of the 18th century. The piano technique was expanding and composers had started using technical tricks to amaze their audience. What composers of the 18th century do you like at most? What about learning a piece from this period and performing it according to the taste of the 18th-century audience?

The What:

  • You will learn one or more elegant piano pieces that will delight your listeners!
  • The goal is to learn not only how to play one or more piano works, but also to understand how such a work was created
  • Every week we’ll have different challenges. Most of the challenges will provide you with new tools, not only for 18th-century music, but for your piano playing in general
  • TBD: A watch party featuring your performance will take part at the end if by popular demand!

The When:

  • Challenge start: Kick-Off Tuesday, July 5th at 11am PT
  • Watch party: TBD

The How:

  1. Join the live stream (or watch previously recorded sessions) and follow along on the topic of the week.
  2. Practice the piece for this challenge on your own, then go to our Updates thread and post your progress!
  3. If you are willing and open to share, add a video or audio recording of your performance. This is optional, but we’ll be able to share our progress together and you might receive some constructive comments! This is a safe space, and we are not here to judge, but to encourage.

The Fun Part:

  • TBD:At the end of our practice challenge, we will be hosting another Watch Party on tonebase LIVE! This will feature user submissions, community awards, and shoutouts!

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

Can I join the challenge if I wasn't there on July 5th?

Yes! Just make sure you watch the first session and complete any workshop challenges before the next challenge.

I have a question, who do I ask?

Feel free to use this thread to ask any questions about this challenge! For a more detailed just DM me here on the forum or on Instagram @dr.antonelladigiulio

Can I practice more than one piece or movement?

Absolutely! This challenge is to help you become familiar with the music of the 18th century, and at the same time learn more about musical structures and musical codes as building blocks of piano works. At the end of this challenge, I would like you to think of music from a different point of view. and to feel comfortable exploring what you do not know yet.

  • I was wondering if the date in the live calendar from the link for the livestream is correct? It says Thursday, July 7 at 11:00, but here it looks like the event will be July 5 at 11:00, or perhaps those are two different events?

I think that the "updates" link, under "the how" in this post is linked to the wrong place (or am I misunderstanding something?)
