Alas, I have a meeting at the same time.  So here's a video of Debussy with holiday lights, if you have time to include it in the concert.

Peter Golemme Thank you so much, Peter!  My recording secret is that my room has a double high ceiling AND I got a new iPhone for my birthday.

Gail Starr well, now your secret is out, thank you for sharing it, and happy birthday, that was a very nice present to get. It sounds like the new iPhone comes with a really good mic.  I am struggling to get a good (recorded) sound out of my piano.  I've got two very expensive mics but no matter where I place them, the sound is 'boxy' -- honking in the midrange.  (the 'Sleigh Ride' upload is not illustrative --just went with the iPad for that one). The tone of yourrecording has a sweetness that I've been unable to capture with my expensive microphones, but I'm still trying.  we've got to be sound engineers on top of everything else in this business.!

Peter Golemme I think Martin made a really good video on home recording last year.  I need to rewatch it!

Gail Starr Yes, I agree; I attended Martin's Tonebase session and it was really good and covered lots of ground.  I've bookmarked it to watch again, and would strongly recommend it to everyone here.  I'm relatively new and unfamiliar with all things iPad and Video, but learning a lot through ToneBase.  But I've made audio recordings of the piano my whole life, with whatever equipment I could afford at the time--starting with cheap cassette recorders. Nowadays, with very affordable equipment you can make recordings of incredible qualtiy, to the point where you can now think about trying to capture a good sound as well as a good performance. Makes you realize how much skill, art and science go into producing the purity and balance of tone and ambience that professional engineers capture on some of our favorite recordings.

Hello all, I won't be available to play tomorrow, but hope to be able to catch the concert from my hotel room .  I'd like to contribute this little video that I put together to post to the "Improvisation" discussion thread (which I'll do next). My light hearted offering towards helping to kick off the winter holiday spirit.

Also experimenting with my new Luma Fusion MultiCam app -- synchronizing video shot with my iPad, iPhone and laptop, respectively.

Please excuse the flubs -- but are they really flubs? -- ah the beauty of improvisation!

Alexander Weymann Thank you Alexander, I consider that high praise from such an accomplished pianist as yourself.  I appreciate that you share your music with us and that you also take the time to listen to and comment thoughtfully on the offerings of so many of us.  And you somehow manage to keep up with your day job too!, which I suspect places many demands on your time.

    • Peter Golemme thank you; you really are very kind. One of the main reasons I love tonebase is that there is no hierarchy, no judgment, and only the friendliest competition. Everyone makes their own unique musical contribution to this piano community and is appreciated for them, and that makes it fun and (relatively) easy to play for others. Playing the piano can be a very lonely endeavor, but in this space, we all share our music without fear and get to enjoy each other's work. I think that's wonderful. I almost couldn't imagine being without it anymore.
