WELCOME TO OUR LATEST TONEBASE PIANO COMMUNITY PRACTICE CHALLENGE:

The Music YOU Love!

Here is our NEXT Community Challenge: "Music YOU Love!" For the next 3 weeks we will work on music that has a deep meaning for us, culminating in a watch party on...you guessed it...February 14, Valentine's Day! You DON'T have to work on music that represents romantic love, but could pick pieces that made you fall in love with music in general, the piano, a composer, or anything! You DON'T have to share WHY you picked a particular piece - this is simply an opportunity for us to come together and practice with renewed vigor!

Start by picking your piece, and then each week I will provide a different objective for you to try in your practice!

The Watch party of February 14th will be of RECORDED videos from the challenge, NOT a live community concert! So make sure to submit your videos and work!

When does this take place?

Challenge start: January 23rd (check out the KICKOFF livestream here:)

https://piano-community.tonebase.co/t/q6h0598/kickoff-music-you-love-community-challenge

Challenge days: January 23 - February 13th
Watch Party of selected submissions: February 14th at 11am PT

(Link coming soon!)

HOW TO START:

1. Pick a piece that has alot of meaning for you! It could be a brand new piece, or one that you have already started working on! Dream big, and pick the piece that's right for YOU!

2. Follow each week's practice advice starting on January 23rd!

3. Practice every day and try to post 2 videos a week!

Why are we doing this?

Because we want to challenge ourselves to practice every day
Because learning together is more fun than learning alone
Because we get to share our progress with others (whether video or just text)
Because new music is wonderful and these pieces were written especially for us!
Because we want to meet our fellow tonebase community members
Because we get to hear new music which we might not play ourselves

    • Jakob After the kickoff on Monday the  23rd (a livestream that you can watch later if you can’t make it), Dominic will create a place to post your weekly video updates and will share some weekly practice advice. Most of us just upload our videos to YouTube and share the link in the weekly pages here. At the end of the challenge, Dominic will compile some of the final videos posted for a watch party on the 14th. This is just a livestream again and can be watched later as well. Looking forward to hearing your playing!

Wow! That’s a wonderful idea. Last Sunday I fell in love with a piece. My teacher has given me Chopin Ballade Nr. 4, and I have started to practice. But for sure I can’t make it in three weeks. I think such a challenge can push me forward.
    Thanks a lot. 🙋‍♀️

I want to try two pieces, one I have been worked on for a while BACH BWV846, the second one is completely new BWV999. Having BWV846 as backup as I will be on vacation for a week so can only practice for two weeks before submitting final video. Great idea!

As a newbie here, I’m going to try to not only get a piece worked up, but also to figure out how to record and upload.  Something different, but as France reminds me of romance, I’m going to work on Francis Poulenc Improvisation 15, Hommage à Edith Piaf.  Same time, though I’m inspired to learn Chopin’s Waltz C sharp minor as Ben is such a good teacher.  We’ll see what shakes out.

    Hi! I’m new here!!
It excites me to see all the answers from people and the pieces they want to perform.
Myself, I want to perform Rhapsody in Blue for piano solo :) I’ve always loved this piece (since I was a kid). My first time listening to it was on Fantasia 2000 and wince then, it stuck with me.
And my first time I heard it for piano solo in a concert, I was amazed and made me try to play it!!

Unfortunately my teaching schedule is my priority right now, so I won't be able to commit to the challenge. But I would love to drop in and see how it all works if I may. I'm sure I will be inspired. I need to learn about recording and uploading videos. Do you mostly use your phones or what equipment do you use?

    • Sue Althouse I use my iPad for the most part, and sometimes my Mac with some microphones for improving the sound. But using an iPhone or something similar will work great!

The best thing would be to upload the video to your youtube, and make the video unlisted (if you don't want it to be open for everyone). Then use the link in the "add video" feature you can see just above the reply button (That option shows up after you have hit Reply).

Sue Althouse Like Sindre, I usually use my iPad. It's easy to use and does a good job of recording (I sometimes use a microphone if I want to be sure I pick up only the piano). When I want to record at a higher quaility (such as for my son's competition-recordings), I use my laptop (PC) and a USB Condenser Microphone.

You can use the video file from the iPad to upload to Tonebase, but most people upload to YouTube as Sindre described. For me, it was good to learn something new - but now I need to learn how everyone adds all the neat effects to their YouTube videos! 🙂

Priya Viseskul Hi Priya! While you are waiting for your real score, have you tried to download it from IMSLP? I use that often if I can’t get a print edition in time.

Priya Viseskul I pay for an annual membership at www.Scribd.com and you can get ANYTHING there...music, books, audiobooks, magazines. It is totally worth it! I probably use it once a day.

Libby Craig I actually posted these for another one of our fellow students who couldn’t get the score online in the UK.  I’d love to learn them, too.  I ended up picking a the Balakirev Toccata.  I’ll post a “day one” video tomorrow! 😊
