WELCOME TO OUR LATEST TONEBASE PIANO COMMUNITY PRACTICE CHALLENGE:

The Music YOU Love!

Here is our NEXT Community Challenge: "Music YOU Love!" For the next 3 weeks we will work on music that has a deep meaning for us, culminating in a watch party on...you guessed it...February 14, Valentine's Day! You DON'T have to work on music that represents romantic love, but could pick pieces that made you fall in love with music in general, the piano, a composer, or anything! You DON'T have to share WHY you picked a particular piece - this is simply an opportunity for us to come together and practice with renewed vigor!

Start by picking your piece, and then each week I will provide a different objective for you to try in your practice!

The Watch party of February 14th will be of RECORDED videos from the challenge, NOT a live community concert! So make sure to submit your videos and work!

When does this take place?

Challenge start: January 23rd (check out the KICKOFF livestream here:)

https://piano-community.tonebase.co/t/q6h0598/kickoff-music-you-love-community-challenge

Challenge days: January 23 - February 13th
Watch Party of selected submissions: February 14th at 11am PT

(Link coming soon!)

HOW TO START:

1. Pick a piece that has alot of meaning for you! It could be a brand new piece, or one that you have already started working on! Dream big, and pick the piece that's right for YOU!

2. Follow each week's practice advice starting on January 23rd!

3. Practice every day and try to post 2 videos a week!

Why are we doing this?

Because we want to challenge ourselves to practice every day
Because learning together is more fun than learning alone
Because we get to share our progress with others (whether video or just text)
Because new music is wonderful and these pieces were written especially for us!
Because we want to meet our fellow tonebase community members
Because we get to hear new music which we might not play ourselves

I'm not yet sure what I'll learn for this challenge, but I well-remember the music which caused my heart to skip a beat when I first heard it: Pictures at an Exhibition (orchestrated). I was perhaps 11 or 12 years old and found this album in my parents' stack of records. I listened to it, and fell in love with "classical" music.

Michelle R You have GREAT taste, Michelle!  I wonder if there is a 2-piano version?  That would be so cool to do together.

Gail Starr  Thank you, Gail! I still have that album and play it on occasion. It could be fun to do a 2-piano version together. The trick would be finding one that is easy enough for me. I might be able to pull off the Promenade section if I adapted it somewhat to fit my level - though I don't think I could play it at tempo in three weeks. Maybe I'll ask Thurmond if he could put together a 4-hands/2-piano version for us? 🙂

  • Hi there! This is my first time contributing. I recently learned Chopin's Nocturne in C-sharp Minor (Op. 27, No.1) and I would like to play this.

Sindre Skarelven  I saw that you're playing Op. 27 No. 2! Our performances should flow well then! I'm excited to hear your performance!

  • I’m thinking Samuel Barber’s Nocturne. I should buckle down and nail the handful of measures that always trip me.

The first movement of Moonlight Sonata holds a special place in my heart. I would like to share it with you all. I hope the timing on 2/14 works for me. 🤞🏻

      Dominic Cheli Hi Dominic!

Can I participate, although I won‘t finish the piece? Start Chopin Ballade Nr. 4 last Sunday.
