    Switcheroo alert!

I previously said I'd record Etude Transcendental no.2. Well I'm afraid it'll be no.1 instead! Because I ate too much KFC and we are what we eat. In addition, for no.2 I'd rather wait for Dominic's advice in his upcoming podcast on difficult passages, which is just two days before the March concert. I'm sure the podcast will be eye-opening for me, and THEN I can apply his advice, practice it and submit it for the Liszt challenge this summer. Promised!

Edit: here's the link, which will be available on the day of the concert:

Thank you so much for your encouraging words!

And no it wasn't recorded with an iPhone. I record the picture with my Android smartphone and the sound with 2 microphones, a Presonus audio interface unit, and the Studio One software.

very nice !  Serious equipment. Yes I record on an iPhone and must confess I don’t like the sound at all. Now the real experiment will be to see how your android recording sounds versus with the above recording. I am making a safe assumption that your playing is excellent as stated above.

the phones and similar devices make remarkably good audio recordings, CONSIDERING.  But they are optimized for conversing and they add processing to boost the voice frequency range, and compression to keep the peaks from distorting.

To improve on that, you need to expand your setup to something like what Noel has -- separate microphones feeding the audio into an interface that can handle the full frequency range, settings adjusted to make sure your loudest sections don't distort, and then sent to a recording device which could be a computer running software intended to capture the full and accurate range of the sound. And then you synchronize that to the Phone's video [Noel have I got that right?].

I don't think this is really necessary for those wanting to post videos here or in our concerts, as the iPhone recordings are still perfectly acceptable in quality and effectively convey the performance, but that's what you would do if you want to take your audio/video to the next level.  I have a similar set up because I'm also trying to make higher quality recordings that I hope to preserve.  I use the set up on my Community Concert offerings, because it's there, all set up, even though I think it's a bit of overkill for those purposes. It does give you many more things to fiddle with and worry about and to potentially go wrong in a recording or performance, but with practice these become less of a distraction the more you work with them.

Oh please, don't expect too much ok? I just wanted to simulate a live participation as much as I could! The piece was barely ready to record!

In the past I used to wait until I was maximally ready before recording, nowadays I start to record as soon as I'm minimally ready. I find this to be therapeutic because recording used to make me overly anxious. Recording early in the process has many advantages, but the first attempts are far from satisfactory. Case in point, I showed this recording to two pianist friends. The first took a full day before giving me a tepid "It's good.". The other one flat out said she didn't like it, saying, and I quote, "It's horrendous. I only like it when you play slow pieces, which you almost never do. You always play pieces where there's a gazillion notes swimming around frantically all over the place like spermatozoids"! That's what she said! So, you have been warned😅.

Only adding on the anticipation, and now I wonder who your friends are 😅 Seriously, good point with recording early on, and I’m glad your participating this way! If we want “perfection”, there’s a nice video of Yunchan from the Cliburns on YouTube, but in here we’re much more curious about Noel’s rendition 🎹

maybe I should have added that the second friend I mentioned is a long time friend from my college years. We even dated back then, as fellow students with big dreams of careers in music (college was in the music program). Ok, TMI!

Re: Yunchan Lim, thanks for mentioning him and me in the same paragraph, it's an honor! And yes he is perfect. But in my defense, he was more than minimally ready😁. I have to say, listening back to my playing, it's not bad in terms of accuracy, but it sounds very raw musically, as you will see , and hear!

Hello Everyone :-) I’m the first time here.

Sophia would like to participate. Maybe as recording.

Welcome Sophia. either way, I think you'll really enjoy the concert both as a participant and  listener. I'm working on the WTC1 c minor myself, but won't have it ready for tomorrow. I'd be keenly interested in hearing another pianist's take on it and possibly trading notes.

Well now the concert is tomorrow, so I'd say it's time to COMMIT.

I'll play the F# minor Prelude and Fugue from Book 1 of the WTC (or just one of them if both is deemed too many pieces.)  It's not as flashy as some of the others on the tentative list I posted below, but it's the most ready. I already have a moderately acceptable recording of it, which I was planning to post on our Bach thread, but I'm going to try playing it live.  These concerts are a great and safe place to practice live performance.

Hopefully it won't collapse into a rubble, but if it does, all I can say is "don't shoot me, I'm only the piano player".

Friends, I expect a big workday tomorrow so I'm afraid I'll miss most of the recital, perhaps even my recording, if it's played (but then again my recording is a super short piece as you'll see, just an introduction so to speak).

Either way, have a great, memorable recital, and I truly hope to make it for the next one!

Hope to see you next time, Noel.  In the meantime, I feel like I've been camping out, standing in line through rain and snow, waiting for the moment when I can click on your video.  But now I'm going to wait further until the concert today (mainly because I've got to cram in some more practice for my own little performance!) , whereupon I'll expect to be greeted by a dazzling coruscation of transcendant notes  and music, and hear for myself what your friend found so "horrendous" !

So sorry to hear you're not feeling well Alexander. I was very much looking forward to your Prokofiev. But you can use this time to let it percolate in your unconsciousness and come out even better.

In the meantime, I have some important medical advice for you, knowing how much it is needed by those in your profession:   FOLLOW YOUR DOCTOR'S INSTRUCTIONS!!
