Tips on Shostakovich Quintet in G
Hi, I am planning to play Shostakovich's quintet for piano and strings in October this year at the conservatory in my city, can anyone give me some general recommendations about the piece?
I would be very grateful if someone could help me out with this. :)

I have played this piece many times, and have a great deal of tips. Perhaps you have some specific questions?
Few Quick Thoughts:
First 2 movement are an homage to Bach (Prelude and Fugue) Opening should have the piano feel like an organ!2 bars before rehearsal 8 Is tricky, recommend memorizing and keeping eyes on 1st violin for the transition.
rehearsal 13 is often played too slowly, keep a determined tempopay attention to cut offs at end of 1st movement (1st violin needs to get ready for 2nd movement hence the early cut off, piano does NOT have a fermata, and other strings cut off last)
Makes sure the Fugue is extremely clear when a melody is being played.
End of 2nd movement, piano part Non ritardando,
3rd movement not too fast! The piece starts unassuming but builds greatly in complexity, the bass line and all the "wrong notes" in piano LH is super important.
memorize between rehearsal 49 - 52. It is tricky and almost impossible to play reading the music because of jumps. memorize how many times the pattern repeats, make sure to notice that the "downbeats" shift between your part and the strings.
End of 3rd movement could benefit from lowest B octaves in last 2 bars for more wild sound.
make sure rehearsal 72, melody is clearly in LH of piano part.
Note the espressivo after rehearsal 73, - that suspension is extremely important! and beatufiul
Throughout the piece, the piano often has staccato bass notes = pizzicato. They should be terse and careful on pedal! The angularity is very pleasing in contrast to lyrical passages (between rehearsal 74 - 75)
Rehearsal 75, make sure NO pedal to disrupt the LH staccato. pedal comes back when LH becomes Lyrical, 2 after 76
make sure the last movement begins very slowly and builds in tempo. This theme is "loosely" based on "Over There"

Just some quick thought hope they are helpful!
