Week 2: Share your progress

WELCOME TO THE LATEST COMMUNITY CHALLENGE!

For this challenge "A Fresh Start" the goal is to pick a BRAND-NEW piece to work on this month.

This is the time to finally open that score that you have been thinking about and get to work!

WHAT ARE WE DOING IN WEEK 2?

  1. You should have selected your new piece by now, so this week let's start sharing our progress
  2. Share a video or type what you have been working on this week! It is always interesting to hear how people start the learning process!

Missed Week 1 since I was not home, so only have a few days on this new piece.  Need to do lots of slow work to improve precision, and learn the 2nd half.  Trying to memorize from the start this time!

Open to ANY suggestions, since I’m a Debussy newbie.

Jack vreeland Not all you! You could do in just a few weeks, I’m sure.  It’s only 4 pages long.

    • Gail Starr oooh, this makes me happy - you have REALLY made this piece your own already! It sounds amazing, full of the appropriate whimsical humor... very much looking forward to hearing you make further progress on it. Agree with Michelle and Sindre that it's a perfect fit for you!

Alexander Weymann I picked it because of YOUR excellent recommendation! 😊. You (and my other amazing Tonebase buddies) are much more familiar with the important piano repertoire than I am.

  • Sorry, I dropped this on week one post as well. Here is update on Scriabin Etude Op 8, No. 8. Baby steps. I worked out fingering and then focus on opening sections portamento voicing. I aspire too "making friends" with the notes. From "The Perfect Wrong Note" William Westney, p 156

It is a great book, but there are many. I enjoy reading about the art of playing, pianists and pianos. These are just the ones I still have. Have loaned and given away many others over the years. Maybe Tonebase could start a book review thread?

Jack vreeland Wow, extraordinary collection! I've read some of them and take note of the rest.

I started a book review thread a year ago, but it wasn't very successful, maybe we can reactivate it or create a new one:

    • Juan Carlos Olite Thank you for that link. I will post my shelf images there and write up a couple thoughts and see if this is helpful to anyone. You have a few I don't know about and will look forward to reading.

Here’s my week 2 progress. It goes decently until that high voice in the treble shows up, and then I grind to a halt and need to do a bunch of calculus to figure out what the next note is. Of course I could just read, and I do eventually decide to look at the music again, but the notes are so far apart that reading is difficult also. I’m keeping my fishing for notes in there so everyone who “goes fishing” at the piano can feel like they have company. 😂
Anyway, hopefully I’ll have the whole thing in ok shape next week, and the week after I can polish!

Marc M Here's to fishing together! Completely in the same boat right now (😄), I have a feeling this is just part of the process with learning much of Scriabin's work. It's sounding gorgeous, and you're doing great!
