Public Space for Two-Week Intensive

IMPROVE YOUR SCALES!

Scales are integral to your technique - all of music is built on them! They are singularly one of the most important things to master for piano playing!

This is a PUBLIC space for submissions! I won't be able to give as much individual attention here, but if you would like to be working on scales and posting your videos here for feedback and discussion with other users, feel free to join in the fun!

Some tonebase productions to get you started

I have started practising the assignments.

I was surprised that grouping the notes itself in the C major-grouping-of-2 scale wasn't as challenging as maintaining the fingering. It still remains a mystery to me why I sometimes end on the 4 th finger on my left hand! Let's see if I can get it right by the end of the 2 weeks!

The Burgmüller, Op 109, No 6 is so pretty,  I just love practising it.  Probably the only piece where I practice with all the repeats.

The G minor-grouping-of-3 scale in Chopin's Ballade No. 1, is probably the most intuitive one for me.

The chromatic scale in alternative fingering is the most challenging one for me, so it is definitely work in progress. I have come across similar alternative fingering in the Hanon book and have been trying to master it in the past, so I thought I'd use the Hanon book for this.

The Czerny exercises are still work in progress.

For the first video, I've recorded the C major and G minor scales. I'm happy to receive feedback on them, and any tips on how to make them sound faster and sweeter. I've just started practising these scales in this way yesterday and today, so bear with me.

Also would love to hear if anyone else has the same issues I had, and how you practised the scales to get them real good.

Lastly, don't you think the Burgmüller exercise is really pretty!  Thanks, Dominic Cheli for assigning it :)

I couldn't find your videos from my phone, are they attached to your post?

Harry Neuwirth just a note, on moving the thumb, Mr Seymour Bernstein discuss this in his tutorial in "Choreographing scales". It may be something to do with the position of your wrist and rotation
