KenR's practice schedule

I start my daily session with stretching my arms, legs, neck and so on (aka the Roskell warm-ups) for 5 minutes. I then do finger stretching (10ths, 1 to 5. 1 to 4, and so on) for a few minutes. My main 30-40 minute study session consists of a selection from the following list:

  • Scales over two octaves in every key - right-hand and left-hand separately. Major, Harmonic and Melodic minor, and Diminished
  • As above with both hands together
  • Broken chords and arpeggios over two octaves in every key
  • Root, 5, 10 in left-hand with Diatonic chords in right-hand over one octave in every key. For example, C, G, E in LH with C, E, G, B (C Major 7th) in RH. D, A, F in LH with D, F, A, C (D Minor 7th) in right-hand. I speak the name of each chord as I play it
  • II, V, I in every key (following the circle of fifths) right-hand and left-hand separately
  • II, V in every key (following the circle of fifths) right-hand and left-hand separately. There are two cycles and I play both of them
  • II, V in every key (descending in semitones) right-hand and left-hand separately
  • Cycle of Dominant 7ths over one octave - right-hand and left-hand separately
  • II, V, I in every key (descending in semitones) right-hand and left-hand separately
  • II, V, I in every key with LH playing chords and RH playing scales as follows:
    • II chord in LH with major scale in RH for one octave starting on the 7th degree on the II chord scale, changing to V chord in LH with major scale in RH for one octave starting on the 7th degree on the II chord scale, ending on the I chord in LH and the last note of the scale in the RH
    • As above replacing the V scale with Jazz Melodic Minor scale based on the II chord
    • As above replacing the V scale with Diminished scale based on the V chord

I then move on to my main study piece, which at the moment is an original piece written by my piano teacher

I then play through my repertory of around 10 pieces - mostly original pieces and jazz arrangements of 1980s hits

I then move on to composition, which sometimes is like pulling teeth, and at other times is a real joy

I finish with practicing improvisation.

If there is enough interest I will be happy to upload videos and/or audio files.
