Lessons suggestions for not quite intermediate

Hello!

I've recently joined Tonebase piano (was on guitar before), and I'm looking for less-than-intermediate lessons to expand my repertoire and improve my technique.

The beginner lessons are too easy, but the intermediate lessons I'm seeing are generally too much to get through without it getting tiring. For example, I've been working through the Brahms Intermezzo in A major lesson, but I'm just not really getting through all of to a satisfactory standard, and I think I need to learn some other things first.

I'd be very grateful for any suggestions!

Thanks!

Roni

  • Have you taken the level quiz? It placed me at an intermediate level (5) which seems to be working great - there are numerous works on here which are not too beginner and definitely present a challenge, yet not too hard for me either to give up (yeah, Brahms is too much for me too!). If you take the placement quiz to see where you're at, I think the suggested repertoire list it creates for you is probably a great place to start.

Jonathan Wing Yes, that was the first thing I did, it put me at 6 but I think it might have put me a little higher than I am, either because I know a fair bit music from other musical studies, or because I was overconfident...馃檲

I've just seen I can look at the lessons from level 5 (and below...) too, so I'll do that!

      Thanks Jonathan!

  • Hi! The Taubman course with Durso is great. Also, lots of streamings with Dominic are practical and enlightening. Also, practicing Hanon works wonders.

The Taubman course looks perfect! Thanks Delmy!

I've already been doing some Hanon, but I can't practise without the fear that it might drive the neighbours nuts. Definitely notice a benefit from it though.

The streams with Dominic are also a great idea.

      Thanks!

While I love Tonebase as a resource for learning, broadening and hearing from the best, there is no substitute for a good hands-on teacher. Look for one in your area. You鈥檒l be pleasantly surprised just how many quality music schools and private studios there are. Even Yelp can help with that.

Best of luck and enjoyment to you!

Gustavo I second this -- the Bach inventions and some of the Well-Tempered Clavier would be a very good exercise! Some variations of the Goldberg too.

Hello, have you tried short sonatinas or Bach Minuets?  There are other pieces available that are easier to follow.  Try works by Dennis Alexander or Carol Rollin.  They are not technically too advanced,, but you'll learn different styles and different techniques.

Ji An Not so much, but I will. I haven't heard of or tried any Alexander or Rollin either, so I'll certainly take a look! Thanks for your help!
