Week 3: Keep the Momentum

By now, the challenge is getting real!

You’ve chosen your piece, spent time with it, and hopefully started to hear it take shape. But this is also the point where things can get hard. The easy excitement of beginning fades a little, and you’re left with the more important part: staying with it.

That’s what Week 3 is about.

Not perfection. Not having everything solved. Just continuing, even when the going gets tough.

Maybe you’ve hit a section that still won’t settle. Maybe progress feels slower than you hoped. Maybe you’re realizing how much more there is to do. That’s normal. In fact, it’s part of the process. This is often the exact moment when real growth happens, if you just keep showing up!

This week, the goal is simple: keep the moving forward!

Even a small step matters:

  • one passage a little steadier
  • one phrase a little freer
  • one practice session where you stayed patient
  • one moment where the music started to sound as you like

That is momentum.

This week, share where you are right now:

  • a short clip from your practice
  • a passage that’s improving
  • a place where you’re still stuck
  • or a few thoughts on what it’s been like to stay with the piece

And if you need, share what might be frustrating you, too.

We are all in this together.

Week 4 will be about recording. This week is about building the resilience to get there.

Keep going. Stay with it. You may be closer than you think.

https://youtu.be/fTvI6DYF35g Thank you to everyone for their encouragement, it really helps to know we have a community who is all working on their respective goals. Here is an overview of the tricky passages in the Waltz by Moszkowski.

My initial plan to get through the whole thing this week had to be altered when I realized I didn't have the necessary time this week. So what I decided on the weekend was to just try to get this middle section memorized. Here is an attempt! Gladly the last week of the challenge can be stretched a little, so there's still some hope to get a decent recording of this piece before the watch party! 🤞🏻

It sounds beautifully lyrical. I'm sure you'll make a great video of this Ballade, Sindre.

Sounds great! Very dramatic and complex compared to the opening. Hopefully the most difficult part is behind you! Looking forward to your final video.

Thanks for all your optimism, Juan Carlos and Vidhya! Yes, let's pretend the most difficult part is behind! :D

Very pleasant sounds, Sindre! As if you're meditating on the meaning of the piece. A very different way of practicing from my chaos and constant state of near-combustion. Can't wait to hear the final product!

so interesting to witness this insight into your practice and development of an interpretation.  This tempo and thoughtful approach is helping me hear new things in the Ballade as well as appreciate its lyricism and contrasting motives. Which is a testament to your playing and musicality. ** This is going to be a great addition to your catalog, & I would encourage you to preserve a permanent, best-available sound quality recording of all 4 ballades, which I think is a major accomplishment.

** and you are unburdened by sheet music as usual! don't know how you do it with so many pieces!

Missed week 1 and week 2 progress videos but have been grinding away at this polonaise for the past couple of weeks! Some things I’m currently focusing on and making notes of:

    - fleshing out the big picture of the piece, making repetitions of phrases/sections different from the first time they’re presented, keeping things interesting in general

    - keeping concentration and focus during high octane passages and not getting overwhelmed by the adrenaline rush

    - trying to separate practicing full run throughs of the piece from practice of individual small sections, which is tough because I‘m currently getting carried away with playing large sections at a time (it’s just too much fun to play 😅)

Fionna, you certainly have technical skill in abundance and I envy you for that. You mention “fun” in your post - I have not managed to feel this emotion while playing and I appreciate your thoughts on this.

I watched almost every one of the fantastic !! pianists and interviews after the second round ( so much - that I became familiar with their names ! ) and so much of Chopin's music . I don't try to play Chopin at all ( my level is of musical understanding is too low :-) ) Just started reading the score of  Chopin's C# minor  a few days ago - the coordination required is rather daunting!.. My wife heard it and complained to me 'OMG it doesnt sound anything close to what I saw on TV.. lol!" I told her ' my dear I am afraid my playing may never get there .. alas ! ' lol!

Yes..! This is damn tough for me at the moment,  but I shall persist against all obstacles no matter what.. for the journey is the real reward..  :-)

I have now adopted a new approach for myself after some introspection. Play

3 pieces - 2 of extreme difficulty for my level , the said Beethoven and Chopin) pieces and 1 simpler piece.. the Bach invention in C major - which I can read through fully -hands separate. And then to make it even more interesting add any additional piece of choice. All of these to be played in sections every evening.  This is a lot of fun..

A side effect that occurred.. I was talking on the phone with a fellow TB officianado yesterday. After sharing our stories for quite some time I suddenly said  "can I play a few lines for you? He said "I dont mean to put you on the spot .. but please go ahead if you want to." and without any hesitation I went to the piano and treated it like my practise session and played a few lines of the above mentioned pieces without any fear !. This would have been absolutely impossible before joining TB..

Week 3.2: measures 23-29 have proven to be quite challenging for me to stitch together. And on Friday I strained my back working, so I haven't had as much time at the piano as I would have liked. But, there is some improvement on this section. I hope to be able to put a recording of the entire piece together this week before we head to Alabama to take care of some family matters.
