  • My favorite memory of performing for an audience would have been on Thanksgiving Day in 2017. In the evening I gave my first performance of Bach's Goldberg Variations for a very small and intimate audience, maybe 5 people! Despite the small audience, I remember enjoying the experience so much, and satisfaction from finally performing one of my absolute desert island pieces!

I would play it again a few weeks later in this video:

Dominic Cheli This is magical! Thank you! I can see why you chose Bach as the one you would like to have dinner with. Your connection to his music is palpable and exquisite!

Dominic Cheli I am deeply moved by your playing of the Goldberg Variations...Majestic...mystical and moving.

I have never had the need to perform in front of an audience, except for public appearances during an exam.

Until I discovered Tonebase, nearly ALL my performances were always with amateur orchestras and chamber groups.

Many years ago, as a teenager, I played both cello and piano with our All-State orchestra.  During our final performance of the Bloch Concerto Grosso for piano & strings, I was playing the piano part on a VERY old piano with several broken ivory keys.

Unbeknownst to me, I sliced my finger on a broken key and there was blood all over the keyboard...it was truly horrifying to look at but I didn't even notice until the piece was over!

Interestingly, I had totally forgotten about the incident until I played the piece again last summer with an amateur chamber orchestra, and this memory came flooding back to me.

Gail Starr Aren't memories interesting, Gail? You'd think that would have stayed with you, but you needed to play the same piece again (hopefully on non-broken keys!) for it to re-enter your mind. What a great story, though.

I have almost no memories of performing, but many many practice/rehearsal memories from my teen years (trombone in band/symphony and double bass in string ensemble), almost all of which are good memories.

Gail Starr Oh my! What an experience, Gail! It speaks to the focus, the zone, that one can get into. I am impressed that you played both piano and cello at that level - all-state.

Michelle R Michelle, I am glad your memories are almost entirely good memories. What a rich experience to play trombone and double bass. The way Tonebase is expanding - adding violin, cello, flute, etc. they may soon have trombone and double bass.

    • Gail Starr Such amazing focus you must have had to play through this without realizing what was going on!

Pauline Thanks Pauline - I would rather enjoy re-learning the double bass. I have wonderful memories of playing. My parents complained that when I practiced the entire house would vibrate (my room was on the second floor)!

Vidhya Bashyam It was only because the piano part was kind of tough.  If I'm doing nothing important, like just walking around and even stub my toe...BOY, I would totally notice.  LOL!
