Where is Piazzolla?

Piazzolla is one of the most performed modern composers in recitals and concerts. His work is loved by audiences especially mainstream audiences.  Where's the Piazzolla?  His works should be here.

I’m not an authority on this question, but as someone who loves Piazzolla…piano for him usually takes back stage to bandoneon and strings. Piano solo arrangements of his works tend to be very difficult and usually end up sounding underwhelming to my ears. Pianists tend to be solo players (way more than, say, clarinetists like my wife), so many of us end up not touching Piazzolla, amazing though he is. This is my speculation.

That said…if you know any good Piazzolla piano albums, please share, because I’d love to hear them!

  • Piazzolla is very frequently performed by solo pianists at recitals and concerts.  Piazzolla is very frequently performed by piano accompanyists at recitals and concerts in many duo, trio, quintet, small ensemble, big band, or orchestral arrangements.

Your speculation is wildly off the mark.

Superblonde DotOrg Cool. Can you recommend any pianists who play Piazzolla solo? I’d love to look into their work. Always on the lookout for good stuff that I haven’t heard before…

    Hello!

I do totally agree and I look forward to finding at least Libertango, here! Meanwhile, I can suggest the wonderful lesson by Pablo Estigarribia you may have missed! https://app.tonebase.co/piano/live/player/pno-pablo-estigarribia-tango-intro

Letizia ooo I forgot about that one, thanks. Libertango would be cool, as well as something on his fugues, which I think are some of the coolest music written.

  • Huge fan of Piazzolla here for 30+ years. Tango Zero Hour is one of the first albums I purchased with my own money. Would love to play some tunes on my piano.

Cecile Daroux does an impressive cover on flute...maybe that's a place to start?
