ABOUT TONEBASE COMMUNITY CONCERTS:
These events are NOT live-streamed OR recorded, but are private zoom meetings where tonebase members can share their hard work and perform for each other!
These concerts can be played LIVE, or if you can't attend, you can submit a recording!
This is a GENEROUS and SUPPORTIVE space.
Performing is one of the best ways to push yourself, and really evaluate the work/progress you have made!
Repertoire is open to any piece!
Memorization is NOT required.
You can play select movements, or even sections of pieces! No need to perform a complete work!
Playing the piano is fun, but sharing your music with others is one of life's great joys. Join in on the fun and cheer each other on!

Gail Starr That is beautiful Gail. It's peaceful and profound and lighthearted at the same time. Just like Ludwig himself! (except perhaps for the peaceful part: I don't think he ever found peace personally, despite the profound quietude of some of his music).
This is one of my favorite sonatas. I still remember hearing it for the first time in the summer of 1970, on a faint and staticky radio station (WHRB in Cambridge, MA), hoping the static wouldn't totally overtake the signal before they could identify this mysterious composer of such joyous and yes profound music. DJ:: "that was music by Beethoven" Me: "Hey! I've heard of him!"

Hi everyone,
I am submitting a short piece by Lili Boulanger for the Spring concert. It's called "D'un vieux jardin" or From an old garden. (which is the Spring connection!
). It's from a small collection and I hope to finish learning another of these pieces in the next few weeks.Derek

I’ll be on a train trying to log in with my iPad during the actual recital, but here is my submission of the F Major Prelude and Fugue from Book 2 of the WTC. :
Someday I hope to be able to play these pieces through totally without mistakes. But alas, that day has not yet arrived. I hope you are able to enjoy them nonetheless.
I’ve posted a few thoughts & observations about the music itself in the “comments” section of the YouTube video … for those who may be interested, and perhaps willing to share their own experiences with these pieces.
I’ve greatly enjoyed all the postings here --- what a wonderful group of colleagues to share music with! I may not be able to participate live today while on the train, but really looking forward to the recital. Thanks everyone!
P.S. In making the video I am continuing my experimentation with the “multicam” feature of LumaFusion, an iPad app, to synchronize and switch among multiple video recordings at different angles. The switching lets you add some variety to the video components of these recordings. The switching here is rather random, and I hope not too distracting; I'm still just figuring out how to do it, and pleased that it happens at all!

Hi! If it’s still not too late, I submit Olivier Messiaen’s “Morceau de lecture à vue”. This is my first piece by Messiaen, still work in progress and dynamic balance and phrasing could be better, but I just felt I really want to be part of the party today.

Judy Kuan Thank you for posting this Judy. I had logged in late and had only an imperfect connection after that. I loved this performance!, and would have hated to miss it. In addition to your very impressive technical proficiency, what I heard was the development of the theme in a very organic way from the gentle opening to the powerful and dramatic conclusion, and how each section contributed to that development. I must say that I understood the piece a lot better after hearing it here. It makes me think that you put a lot of thought into this interpretation -- unless you should tell us that it comes effortlessly to you without any forethought? --- in which case, thinking of my own struggles to formulate a concept, I would respond ARGGHHH! Thanks again!.

Peter Golemme Thank you for your kind and thoughtful words! I appreciate your taking the time to listen to my recording. I have a tendency to be a nervous wreck when performing - especially from memory - and rush and then all artistry gets lost, so it's encouraging to hear your perspective. I'm also amazed at your Bach - his music is so complex, and I can't remember ever being able to play his music so cleanly, much less from memory.
There was no part of this piece that was effortlessly learned, let me assure you of that
I've watched multiple masterclasses on Tonebase - including one by Dominic Cheli and YouTube (Perahia, Andnes), on top of 10 private lessons with my piano teacher since early December. Working on some of the Chopin Etudes - much below tempo - for years also helped me be able to spend more time working on the interpretation instead of 100% on technical struggles... I can't tell you how many times my teacher encouraged me to work more on the "easier" first ~1/3 of the piece because it was sounding mechanical with a confusing inner pulse Also working on Chopin's Op. 51 impromptu a couple of years ago with all its polyphony and potential for sounding too repetitive also helped a lot.And the journey continues... I'll put it aside now perhaps for a couple of months to work on other rep, but this is a "forever" piece and there's a lot more I'd like to be able to do with this piece especially the coda re: interpretation, technique, and performance resilience...

Judy Kuan what a lovely tale of your journey with this masterpiece! I have a feeling that if you take a few months to work on other rep, you’ll return to it with more ease of mastery without even trying. I thought it sounded beautiful just the way you played it!

First of all, big bravo to your Scriabin, it sounded fantastic and awesome video presentation!Actually, for the community concerts, because alot of people play LIVE, we have had a habit of actually not recording the events to allow people to feel more comfortable.
However, this is a policy we started very long ago, when the community was in its early stages. Now, I think people are seeing how gracious everyone is, and feel much more comfortable. We might look at changing things to allow for recording the entire concert because we are getting more and more requests to watch it later (like every other livestream).
Sorry there isn't a recording to watch of today's but thank you for your question - it reflects what other people are also asking, and I am taking note of this!

Dominic Cheli I will be honest in that the non-recording factor was the main reason I was "comfortable" performing live instead of submitting a recording beforehand... Or perhaps I would have chosen another piece that is not at the absolute limit of my abilities.
