Judy Kuan Thank you for posting this Judy.  I had logged in late and had only an imperfect connection after that. I loved this performance!, and would have hated to miss it.    In addition to your very impressive  technical proficiency, what I heard was the development of the theme in a very organic way from the gentle opening to the powerful and dramatic conclusion, and how each section contributed to that development.  I must say that I understood the piece a lot better after hearing it here.  It makes me think that you put a lot of thought into this interpretation -- unless you should tell us that it comes effortlessly to you without any forethought?  --- in which case, thinking of my own struggles to formulate a concept,  I would respond ARGGHHH!  Thanks again!.

Peter Golemme Thank you for your kind and thoughtful words! I appreciate your taking the time to listen to my recording. I have a tendency to be a nervous wreck when performing - especially from memory - and rush and then all artistry gets lost, so it's encouraging to hear your perspective. I'm also amazed at your Bach - his music is so complex, and I can't remember ever being able to play his music so cleanly, much less from memory.

There was no part of this piece that was effortlessly learned, let me assure you of that 😉 I've watched multiple masterclasses on Tonebase - including one by Dominic Cheli  and YouTube (Perahia, Andnes), on top of 10 private lessons with my piano teacher since early December. Working on some of the Chopin Etudes - much below tempo - for years also helped me be able to spend more time working on the interpretation instead of 100% on technical struggles... I can't tell you how many times my teacher encouraged me to work more on the "easier" first ~1/3 of the piece because it was sounding mechanical with a confusing inner pulse 😅 Also working on Chopin's Op. 51 impromptu a couple of years ago with all its polyphony and potential for sounding too repetitive also helped a lot.

And the journey continues... I'll put it aside now perhaps for a couple of months to work on other rep, but this is a "forever" piece and there's a lot more I'd like to be able to do with this piece especially the coda re: interpretation, technique, and performance resilience...

Judy Kuan what a lovely tale of your journey with this masterpiece!  I have a feeling that if you take a few months to work on other rep, you’ll return to it with more ease of mastery without even trying.  I thought it sounded beautiful just the way you played it!

Dominic Cheli I will be honest in that the non-recording factor was the main reason I was "comfortable" performing live instead of submitting a recording beforehand... Or perhaps I would have chosen another piece that is not at the absolute limit of my abilities.
