The Official Lisztomaniac Complete Transcendental Etudes Challenge!

This is it, dear piano friends, the ultimate celebration of our love for the piano, and of the 140th anniversary of Franz Liszt ascending to the heavens!

You are all invited to submit a recorded performance of one or more Études d'Exécution Transcendante, in whichever iteration you like! (S.136, S.137, or S.139)

As of July 1st you have probably learned the notes of your Etude(s), so the following 4 weeks will be to bring it to the most Lisztomanic state possible!

The watch party is set for July 31st, 2026 (the exact date of His 140-year anniversary of death) at 2pm EST.

Let's get the dopamine and catecholamines surging like never before!

  I wouldn't find it odd at all! It's a Liszt year after all, so a few Liszt encores after the Etudes would certainly be welcome.

  oh, do lyapunov's transcendentals count as transcendentals? I know the whole theme is Liszt Transcendental Etudes, so if there is overflow, I don't have to do the S140 encore. however, it is my only Liszt short piece i have :/ i don't think a 15 minute ballade or 25 minute opera transcription would be fitting of the occasion.

  I was (mostly) joking. But I do think if someone couldn’t get any of the Liszt ones learned in time but did have one from Lyapunov’s set ready, we would welcome that submission with open arms because those pieces are heard so rarely.

My piano teacher says I need to do Liszt's Technical Exercises and learn all of his Etudes.

Does anyone know which edition of the Technical Exercises is best?

  Well, it depends on the type of technique you need training in. There are, if I remember, around 60 exercises over 12 books in the Schubert edition. i did book 3 and 5 for thirds and sixths since Lucrezia Borgia required it. See what your repertoire requires!

  its formally called Technische Studien s146. schubert edition is the most common version. try imslp research first, then i think alfred masterworks prints it.

Okay, so having just posted lamenting my small hand issues with the Schumann piece I chose, I’m now going to put myself forward or Ricordanza. Just been playing through it and yes there are certainly challenges but I think - well I’m prepared to work at it and see what happens!

  incidentally, I shall be using this old edition from my student days. The pages are very yellowed and brittle now!
