The Official Lisztomaniac Complete Transcendental Etudes Challenge!

This is it, dear piano friends, the ultimate celebration of our love for the piano, and of the 140th anniversary of Franz Liszt ascending to the heavens!

 

You are all invited to submit a recorded performance of one or more Études d'Exécution Transcendante, in whichever iteration you like! (S.136, S.137, or S.139)

 

As of July 1st you have probably learned the notes of your Etude(s), so the following 4 weeks will be to bring it to the most Lisztomanic state possible! 

 

The watch party is set for July 31st, 2026 (the exact date of His 140-year anniversary of death) at 2pm EST.

 

Let's get the dopamine and catecholamines surging like never before!

       The cadenza in measures 46-52 (or 46-58), but that is probably too short.

       that’s not possible in a piece of this degree of difficulty and complexity; not with amateurs.  will work his magic to cut the sections together as seamlessly as possible, but we will have to accept tempo fluctuations. “Chasse-neige” is an absurdly demanding, grueling piece; the only way for a dauntless band of non-professional pianists to tackle this together is with good-natured humor, ready to have fun and to be very forgiving.

       I think we can simply agree to play it on the slow side of normal because it's the kind of piece that doesn't need to be played fast to be effective. Arrau's is one of the slowest versions and arguably my favorite. I bet if we aim for his tempo we'll end up slower , and I'd be ok with that!

       O.K., here is my suggestion:  m. 1-17,  m. 18-36,  m. 37-46 (Sindre, I’ll be happy to switch with you if you want to do it the other way around, but there was no good way to split “our” chunk in the middle),  m. 47-52 (Maria, the cadenza really starts at bar 47),  m. 53-79.

       I’m more than happy with 1-17

      one suggestion, I know it’s tricky with this piece but maybe we could set an approximate metronome marking so that we are all roughly on the same page regarding the tempo

       My score says quaver 100. Arrau sounds like 80 (in tempo, not age!). So.. 80? Let's wait for the input from our saner friends.

       that’s what  had suggested, and I thought it wouldn’t be realistic with a piece like this, but I suppose once we’ve all worked on it for a couple of months, we can make suggestions for a goal tempo and then meet in the middle.

       I know I just suggested a tempo, but I agree with you. I know I will practice with the desire to reach my ideal tempo of around 100, because that's how I feel the piece. If I make it (I probably won't) then it would be easy to go down to 80.

       Sounds great! I'm very pleased with "my part". It's also nice that our tempos will at least be "in the same neighbourhood", we can talk it over when it gets closer. Will be fun to do this!

    I end up with the biggest chunk of Chasse-Neige 😅. Well, being Canadian, I should be able to make it. Incidentally I have never been able to delete the mental image of a giant snowblower when thinking of the words Chasse-Neige.

       It’s only fitting that you should be the one to finish this project!! Our mountain is more covered in ice than fire, so bring your warmest boots and clothing. 
      As a Norwegian I should be prepared for the second part of this snowy-adventure.

       I believe I have the shortest section, which is probably ideal because I am also preparing for upcoming performances/competitions/festivals, in addition to learning Paysage.

       Actually I have to say, it would make more musical sense if you finish at the end of bar 56, but I'm good either way!
