It would be cool if 2-week intensives could start on Fridays or Saturdays. That way, we could have the weekend to do the assignment and then submit it early/mid-week so we can get feedback. Sometimes, on the Monday-start schedule, it happens that we don't submit till Friday/Saturday, and instructors don't see it because they're off for the weekend, and then the intensive ends with an anti-climax.

Nonetheless, ToneBase is great, so keep up the good work!

  • Tonebase has been life changing for me. I love all the high level content as well as the amazing efforts with community engagement.  It might be nice to know some of the challenges a few months in advance at least so we can fit them into our learning plan for the year. Also, I do like the longer 4 week challenges as they give us more time to get into the details of a piece. Thanks for all that you do for us Dominic! You and the whole team are much appreciated by us!

I really love Tonebase (I have piano & violin). I would love to see chamber music content on balance, interpretation, timing, etc

Love Tonebase and wish I could spend more time in the forums - too busy watching lessons and past content! And practicing of course...

What I would really like to see is a long term calendar of planned member concerts or watch parties or whatever they are called. Maybe it is on the site or the forums somewhere, and I haven't found it? Since I am a 4A player (Adult Amateur, Advanced Age), it does take me quite a while to make progress and get something ready. If I knew the dates of upcoming opportunities to play for others, I would stand a better chance of being ready and participating.

If we can't have the exact date (I know scheduling is difficult), just having a general idea, like "middle of August" or "end of November" would be good.

  • I love Tonebase!

What brought me in was the library of detailed videos about specific piano pieces that coincided with what I was practicing at the time. That’s also the greatest value of Tonebase in my opinion. If I want something improved, it’s even more of that! :)

There are a few minor things that I can mention.

    1. Faster video startup time.

    2. Ability to download videos for offline viewing.

    3. Keep choice of black background if you choose to implement white background.

  • I would like to see more solo jazz piano instruction - especially if it entailed a step-by-step approach from beginner to advanced player. I like your step-by-step recommendations for developing a classical repertoire with proper technique. Would love to see a guidance system like that devoted to solo jazz piano, along with sighting reading coaching applied to the jazz idiom.

    • Robert Ryan I very much second this request! I would love to see more jazz on Tonebase

  • I would like tonebase to come out with a large statement on the complete and dismal failure of tonal harmony (Rameau's legacy) for the understanding/analysis of music written in 1200AD-1920AD and a disclaimer posted on all lessons including these failed theories.

I’m 78 and during Covid I resumed piano having stopped age 15. I have an excellent teacher but decided to join Tonebase (life Subscription) as the best on line resource.   I think I’m not alone in finding joy in piano once again but I’d love to see more for the early intermediate slow learning player.  Not just exercises but pieces dissected and simplified for an older slower brain.  My aim is not just to rattle through pieces, but to play melodically within my ability and a fraction beyond.

Thanks Kaja….. PS. I also play tenor Sax with my local country town Concert and Stage bands, bit beyond my ability but enjoyable.

I'm a lifetime member of the guitar forum and I love it, but here are a few suggestions:

    1. More content for beginners and intermedite players, particularly of the classical repertoire: i.e. complete opuses of etudes from Sor, Guiliani, Carulli, etc.

    2. For some reason I find the navigation menu somewhat confusing, please consider redisigning it.

    3. Just today I received a message about an interesting workshop, so I eagerly clicked on the link but instead it took me to a landing page asking me to subscribe or login. After I login, I'm not taken to the workshop but I have to look for it manually, and it took me a while to find it. This is a usability and user's experience issue.

    4. A regular course of harmonic analysis of staple pieces, i.e. one that is updated regularly and builds up over time.

    5. There is a lot of emphasis on technique and performance topics. But what about a course on arranging for classical guitar? That'd be fab!

    Happy practicing 🤗

Manuel I second point (1) as a beginner/late beginner … and point (4) would be great for musicianship!

  • I really don’t like the layout design and functionality of the community pages. Too much information, and it’s hard to find things. My head hurts looking at them so I avoid going there.  I also posted a question two months ago which is yet to be answered. I had hoped it would be answered by the TB team. Did I post it in the wrong spot?
Sorry for the grumble. I love TB, but a part of me thinks perhaps the site is now trying to cover too much?

Is it possible to bring back sorting all videos by most recent? There are now so many categories to click through, it will be nice we could sort by most recent videos and see what videos we might have missed quickly.

mel Yup! We can sort through each individual category, but I wish we could sort through all videos at once, that will be so useful.

For practice challenges, there might be more involvement if students could use their general level information to opt into a subgroup of learners of a similar proficiency, unless that is counter to another  objective or teaching philosophy .

  • I'd like to be able to manually mark a lesson as completed.

Sometimes I'll go back and re-watch a single lesson for review, and it resets my progress through the rest of the course. It makes it look as if I haven't completed the course.

It would be great to have an index and timeline for the livestreams. The value of the content is variable compared to the lessons and often less dense. It would really help us find the parts most relevant to our own studies quickly.

  • It would be appreciated if live and recorded uploads were pitched/grouped at a level that is appropriate for the student.

The latest 4WI is a good example.  I have reviewed the comments and my understanding is that many of the contributors so far are teachers in their own right.

There appeared to be a prevalence for Rachmaninoff in the pieces that are going to be learned by those students - from scratch and within a four-week time scale.

It's not helpful to me to be spend time and effort uploading videos that are much less advanced than others and I am sure that you would not appreciate my efforts with Rach 3, that is, over the defined four-week timescale.
