Week 2 Thread: The Era of Haydn and Mozart! 🐴

Welcome to the Main Thread for the third week of "Mozart & Haydn - Music from the 18th Century" challenge!

This week, we will talk about the different ways composers were trained during the 18th century and how they could achieve such high productivity through schemas and patterns

Look at a different piece by the same composer you are studying and try to compare the music to the new piece you are practicing now.

If you are ready, post a short clip of the patterns you found in your music! One of the ways we grow is through feedback and self-reflection.

Pick a piece from the suggested repertoire according to your level or share any piece written during the 18th century that you have been working on!

If you want to describe your process, feel free to use the following template.

  • Piece(s) you have been working on:
  • Things you found easy:
  • Things you found difficult:

Happy sharing 😍

    Happy Week 2, Piano Friends!

Monika & I worked on the 2nd mvt. of our Haydn Sonata in b minor, but I started the 1st mvt while she completed the 3rd mvt.

    • Gail Starr Bravo Gail! I always love watching your playing- so crisp while also caressing the keys. Lovely dynamics. You and Monika Tusnady picked a great piece (I love minor keys) and both played it beautifully!

Derek McConville Thank you! Monika Tusnady figured out the ornaments, and then she showed me. 😍

    • Gail Starr Beautiful! For the Menuet, it is much improved compared to last week. I would still prefer the quatrains a bit more regularly. I think it is your choice, which is fine too. A small correction for the end of the second section before the reprise: the last two notes are quarter notes, but in the recording, they sound a bit faster. It is funny to me to notice that I just corrected this same thing to a very talented student of mine who is also playing this Sonata for a competition in October :)

The first movement is beautiful. What recordings are you listening to for this piece?

Gail Starr I just  listened to these two movements. I love your expansive playing! You give this piece a sense of importance. I also really liked the way you changed the dynamics in the repeats of the Trio - that made it really interesting and surprising. Oh...and the FLUFFY trills in the Minuet 🥰🥰

    • Gail Starr Awesome, Gail! Must echo the others, your ornaments are fantastic! And you bring out so much of the contrasts and qualities needed for this work.

Antonella Di Giulio Thank you for your excellent comments!  I agree that the quatrains should be more regular, so I'll try to do that.  And as I was playing, I noticed that those quarter notes were too fast.

    • Gail Starr marvelous playing! Your ornaments are very clean. I like the overhead view. It is so fun to be able see all of your nimble fingers dancing across the keys!

Susan Rogers Thank you so much!  I am using a new iPhone stand that rotates. Vidhya Bashyam recommended it from Amazon.  I like it so much that I even used it to hold my phone in the kitchen tonight to make a new recipe!

  • Here is my update  on the Mozart Adagio. This is the second part with ornaments. still so much to do, wrong notes, articulation, generally feeling more secure. Also it annoys me that my hands are seldom together. any tipps for aligning my hands are very welcome. If I try hard my tone suffers… 😒

    • Andrea Buckland Listening to this was a beautiful way to start my day.

It is coming well along.... maybe try to play the left hand a bit softer, so that the right hand can shine a bit more :)

      Beautiful trills too.

Andrea Buckland I love what you're doing! It occurred to me as I was listening that this might have been the way Mozart improvised, with the little runs, the contrasts, the variations on motifs, and the "formulas" that Antonella spoke of in her first Livestream. En passant, it's quite the music room you have there, with the double bass (?) behind the piano and the drum set reflected in it!
