What classical composer most makes you think of the beatles?

I know this is a strange question, and I will not give me answer so as not to bias folks. If you want to answer, interpret the question quite broadly. I don't mean that the music sounded similar, necessarily, but rather that somehow, there was some common spirt or  vibe to the composer and to the Beatles.  I am being deliberately vague because i am curios how people make associations in music.

The first thought that came to mind is Bach, I think probably primed by the harpsichord in Because

  • I studied set B for leaving certificate honours music here in Ireland which included The Beatles songs ‘When I’m 64’, ‘Sgt. Pepper’s’ and ‘She’s Leaving Home’ from the concept album Sgt. Pepper’s’. We also studied Mozart’s Piano Concerto no. 23 k.488 in A, Berlioz Symphonie Fantastique movements 2 and 4 (Un Ball and March au Supplice) and Raymond Deane Seachanges.  I took an online course on teaching it with the Royal Irish Academy of Music and I made up PowerPoints on each.

Here are some of my notes about style mainly in these particular three songs.

I hope I’m right in my judgements. If not, please correct me, I’m here to learn, from others and I’m excited to see what comes up in this discussion since I love the Beatles so much. I did get an A in both my leaving cert and the RIAM course, but honestly I’m only a total amateur to everyone else on Tonebase.

I’m only here for the love of music; I’m not the best Classical musician. I’m from a Traditional Irish Music Background and studied it in college. My Dad made a record with Micheal O Suilleabhain in the 70’s called Oro Damhnaigh, it’s the old style of Irish Music like The Chieftains, recorded when people were starting to experiment with fusion etc, in Irish music.. Micheal plays a Harpsichord on the album. https://youtu.be/1Q9Sy3iiWA0 It’s on Apple music. I’ve played Piano since I was six, and I switched from Irish trad flute to Classical last year. I’m only lower intermediate-ish. I go to SETU Music School.

I think they’re most like Mozart because of the musical or stylistic features. I love the Beatles since I was young, I perform with a group of Irish Dancers and Musicians in St. Micheal’s Irish Center in Liverpool every few years. I’ve spent a lot of time listening to musicians in the Cavern Club. Well worth a visit.  I’m not bragging though, I’m completely average, I just love music. Hopefully this is interesting to you and helps.

I am so glad you said Mozart because that was exactly what I was thinking.  The exuberance,  the catchiness and simplicity of some of the Melodies.  Certainly symphony number 25 made me think of the Beatles though in does not sound like any Beatles song.  I also feel like their was a youth and innocence in both Mozart and Beatles early music, an emphasis on harmony balance and beauty.  Then they both became more emotionally complex.

imagine the Beatles in their time transported back to the era of prime Mozart.  What would they think of each other? Would mozart see the genious of the Beatles?

    • I think genius recognises other genius. Maybe they would have worked together. I can definitely hear it in Symphony no 25 and When I’m 64.

The first composer who comes to mind is Bach. It’s hard to hear the F major Invention anymore without thinking of All You Need is Love. Then there’s the Bach invention-style interlude in the middle of In My Life. It’s hard to believe it’s not actually by Bach.

Revolution 9 on the White Album was a tribute to John Cage!
