Ursina’s practice diary

Hello,

I am still very new to the Tonebase community. Not sure whether this is how it should be done 😃

I’m working on the following pieces:

Bach - English Suite No 2

Schubert - Impromptu Op 142 No 3

Chopin - Polonaise-Fantaisie

Welcome! Fantastic pieces you are working on!

This is absolutely how it’s done. The diary is your space, so you decide how to use it. Would love to see some posts on these pieces, if you want to share some videos! :)

Ursina Boehm Absolutely gorgeous playing! Brava! Giving every variation the character needed.

And that Bösendorfer looks and sound so good!

I’ve neglected my practice diary for quite a while. I am now working on a completely different repertoire:

Clara Schumann’s Sonata in g minor (1st and 3rd movements), Beethoven Op 78, Debussy’s Prelude Ondine and a very short Gigue by Mozart, KV 574.

Anyone else working on some of those pieces?

Ursina Boehm Can’t wait to hear you perform these amazing works. While I am not learning any of these, I am learning the Schubert Impromptu you expertly played in your earlier post 😊

Ursina Boehm Hello Ursina.  I played Op. 78 many many years ago. I was entranced by it after hearing Russell Sherman play it as part of a complete Beethoven cycle in Jordan Hall in Boston in the 1970's. It was much less familiar to people than the other Sonatas (many assumed I was talking about Op. 79 when I said I was working on it). I used it as part of a successful audition to the Manhattan School of Music (though after much soul searching about whether I could realistically  expect to become a concert pianist, I decided not to enroll (and have always wondered what if)). In digitizing some of my old cassettes recently I found a recording I had made of the first  movement that I had totally forgotten about. All of which is a long way of saying I love this Sonata and it holds a special place in my heart and memory. I enjoyed hearing you play it in the recent Challenge and look forward to its continued evolution in your hands.

oh wow 😮! Thanks for sharing such great memories! That must have been amazing! I also ask myself from time to time the “what if” question. But I am grateful that I have now the time to discover some of amazingly beautiful compositions.

For choosing new repertoire I decided to finally go for two of my dream pieces. Why should I wait longer?!

I will now start to learn Bach’s Partita No 6 and Schubert’s Sonata in A Major, D 959.
Is anyone also working on them or having in their repertoire?

As a third - and short piece - I am learning the first Nocturne by Fauré. For me this is the first time that I play something from this French composer. So beautiful! But I need to read some background information as I am not familiar with his style.

Schubert D959 - Beginning of the Allegro: First practice video

    https://youtu.be/voLT-tlUAJE

From now on, I want to use this practice diary on a regular basis. It is so important to record oneself when practicing. I tend to be hesitant and also lazy with that. Now, that I want to learn Schubert D 959 and Partita 6 by Bach, I need to plan and structure my practice sessions more seriously!

My second big project: Bach Partita No 6. First Practice Video of the beginning of the Toccata. I still need to develop much more freedom in my playing. It should be played in the style of a French Ouvertüre. But it is a start 😀

Last week I had the chance to attend a piano camp here in Switzerland. I used this opportunity to work on the Mozart Rondo that I had chosen for the Mozart challenge. Here is a first recording of the piece.
Maybe not a good idea to make a recording on such a hot summer day. My hands got a bit sweaty towards to end. But it is great way to see which parts of the feedback that I got during the piano camp are already in place and where I have to continue to work on.

Again, excellent playing! I can't really tell from the video if you are tense, but you should always try to relax your hands.

I never got around to recording my Mozart sonata movement and at some point will also submit a very late video!

Also, it looked like your piano was plugged into the wall. Do you have a Disklavier/Silent Edition, or do you have a humidity regulation system (or something else)?

And shoes, haha! I have pedaled in stocking feet but never in bare feet. Does it help?
