General information for the Practice Plan Challenge!

WELCOME TO OUR LATEST TONEBASE PIANO COMMUNITY Challenge:

The Practice Plan Challenge

With the introduction of the tonebase Practice Plans, we also released 13 new courses across the core abilities needed to play the piano.

Scales

Arpeggios

Dynamics

Phrasing

Trills

Pedaling

Double Notes

Chords/Octaves

Articulation

Repeated Notes

Leaps

Rhythm

Sightreading

The Goals:

  1. The #1 goal is to improve your pieces/playing by using the tonebase Practice Plan!
  2. We will all focus on three abilities each week (+ sightreading because this is ALWAYS good for you!).
  3. The 3 new skills will be announced on Monday of each week so that we can all work on things together!
  4. We are all different levels, so by clicking on the course links above, you can scroll down to your appropriate leveled video. That is what YOU should watch/work on for the given week.
  5. Then, you will write or post a video demonstrating how you are working on the different abilities!
  6. You are encouraged to show how you are trying to apply the abilities in your pieces! (Ex. you watch a scales video, then write how it may have helped improve the ending of Chopin's G minor ballade!)
  7. With the focused work of this plan and challenge, we should all be able to improve our repertoire over the next month, and post submissions of our final performances to be watched in a "Watch Party!"
  8. Optional: Use the Practice Breakdowns to help guide your work!

When does this take place?

Challenge start: Monday, February 26th

Challenge days: February 26th - March 25th
Watch Party of selected submissions: March 26th at 11am PT!

HOW TO START:

1. Take the Practice Plan Quiz if you haven't already!

2. Choose a repertoire piece that you really want to focus on the next month

3. Pay attention to the Weekly threads posted, that will give further guidance!

4. Optional: Download the Practice Breakdowns!

Why are we doing this?

Because we want to challenge ourselves to practice every day
Because learning together is more fun than learning alone
Because we get to share our progress with others (whether video or just text)
Because new music is wonderful and these pieces were written especially for us!
Because we want to meet our fellow tonebase community members
Because we get to hear new music which we might not play ourselves

  • Challenges are a great way to make progress by challenging yourself(and others) to be better than you are today.

  • Where do I find the weekly threads posted if I am to follow the plan? I cannot find the 3 segments we are working on this week. I just found this today.

    Hi there!
I already have a personal challenge for the month of March, and I'm happy to be able to share my progress here.  I'll play some Chopin, Mozart, Schubert and maybe Liszt.
    Ciao! 🌞😎✌🏻

  • I'm currently very slowly going through Chopin Polonaise op 71 no 1. I will try to participate if my time and energy allows - if anything I should make time to watch the practice plans.

  • I promise, I’ll post something soon, but it’s been rough - this challenge could hardly have come in a busier month for me. Nevertheless, I have, been watching Practice Plan videos appropriate for my level and have seriously worked on sections from the pieces currently on my agenda (and even from a couple of others) that aligned with each week’s themes.
