I'm not yet sure what to play--ideally, it will be Chopin's Etude Op. 10 No. 9 in f minor, however I started it three weeks ago, and it is a Chopin Etude, so it might not be ready. I'll send in an update in a couple weeks, and if I cannot play the Etude, I will include my replacement piece in the reply.

Hello, here to update my piece. The etude will not be ready by then, so I’d like to play Chopin Scherzo No. 1. But is it too long? Is there enough time to play it? If it is too long, please let me know and I will switch to a little Chopin prelude or something, as I have not much else prepared.😅

Sofia S. I was waiting for someone to play a Scherzo! In italian "trick or treat" is "dolcetto o scherzetto", so I was asking me if I missed something about American Halloween 😅

I find this is a perfect piece for Halloween.

Don't mind about the length, because it seems like everybody plays longer and longer pieces every time. We'll listen to their concert and we'll listen to your piece as well!

      Ciao Sofia!

Sofia S. And since you are from Florida, let me please send to you all the warmest vibes for these terrible hours you may be going through due to the Hurricane.

      Hugs from Italy to Florida

Letizia Thank you! Fortunately where I am, only the outer, tropical storm-like bands are on the way. (Knock on piano)

Gail Starr Hope the hurricane isn’t too bad by you, Gail. Hopefully it’ll die down a lot upon landfall, and the Orlando area won’t get hit too bad. Sending you well wishes and lots of luck during this storm.

Letizia That’s really cool and really interesting! I love learning about different languages and cultures. And, glad you’re excited about the scherzo, and also that playing a longer piece is fine. Kind of new to this whole community concert (and just concert in general) thing, lol.

Sofia S. Letizia Thank you both for your well wishes!  We have prepared as much as possible, but mostly we are fortunate that we live in a new home, built to current hurricane-prevention standards (with a special kind of roof and hurricane windows).  Fingers crossed!

Letizia Do children in Italy do « trick or treat » on Halloween evening and dress up in costumes?

Gail Starr Yes: in Italy we say "dolcetto (treat) o (or) scherzetto (trick)".

Originally in Italy the first of November is Ognissanti, All Saints' Day (Catholic holiday) and the second of November is All the Dead Day. In southern Italy the tradition similar to that of the Dìa de Los muertos is still alive, while in northern Italy the practice of Halloween as a pagan holiday has also spread, without symbolic meaning (unless you are pagan, satanist or some sort of witch 😅). What kind of symbolic meaning Halloween has in the US?

Letizia Many decades ago, Halloween had a relation to All Saint's Day ( the night before is All Hallow's eve) but in recent decades it's all about the parties, costumes and lots and lots of candy for the kids.  They enjoy walking from house to house saying "trick or treat".  If you don't give them a treat, they can do a trick (like putting toilet paper in your trees)!

Dominic Cheli Yay! Thank you. I can’t wait to play it… but I’m nervous too because I haven’t performed it for any pianists or people who will hear even the tiniest mistake yet.
Well, there’s  a first time for everything!

I don't have anything ready, as I'm in the beginning stages of two pieces (unless the Clementi C Major Sonatina, 1st movement, A section way under tempo would be ok to play).

  • Hi everyone, i'd like to play Brahms op.118 no 3 for this concert. Not very spooky but still a hint of autumn 🍁 it's about 4 mins long 😉 Derek

    • Derek McConville that piece has so much drama and panache! One of my music teachers in high school played it really well and it significantly lifted his coolness factor in my eyes!

    • Alexander Weymann thank you, it's certainly a work in progress but I'm tempted to learn most of op.118 as these later Brahms pieces are pure gold I think :)

Derek McConville Yes (now that I finally recovered from a very long bout of Covid!).  Excited to attend the NYC TB Intensive in November.

(Luckily, I can stay with my niece at her apartment...otherwise it's very pricey to stay in Manhattan!).
