Basics of Jazz Theory - is there a workbook

Hi there, I am currently going through Jeremy鈥檚 course and was wondering if there is an associated workbook with all the examples shown? And the chord exercises. I can鈥檛 seem to locate it. Thank you, and hopefully not use the error thank you. Leandro

  • I have the same question for both of the new jazz courses, which look great. Workbooks? Sheet music? Anything printable to help?

  • I would recommend The Berkely Book of Jazz Harmony.  I find that is is one of the most thorough and accessible texts of this kind.  I was studying in Boston in the 1980s when this text was in its first iteration.  The subsequent editions have been expanded, broadening its scope.  If you have a sound basis in traditional harmony and counterpoint this course will build on that foundation.  You will see the relationship of the two approaches to each other.  This is particularly important when developing chord substitutions to the point where they become natural to you, much in the way the studying and gaining mastery of Hanon or Czerny did when you moved from your beginner stage to the intermediate, and then again when you become an advanced pianist.

Jeremy himself is an excellent writer and I have a few of his books.  Check him out on Amazon to look at his "Jazz Piano Fundamentals" and "Playing Solo Jazz Piano".

What a great question Stephanie. I wonder if you could ask Jeremy the same question. ( and then share it on this feed). I am confused as to which of his own books to choose (thank you Gail) . My intuition says it makes sense to begin with Book 1 no matter. how much classical training we have. But I'd love more advice before purchasing. And David - thank you for the Berkelee recommendation.

  • the Jazz Piano Book of Mark Levine is a must. Also try to listen a lot of jazz, Evans, Peterson, Tatum, Clark, Jarret, and if you have courage, try to play some Art Tatum and Oscar Peterson trascribed music.
