The Debussy Challenge!

Sun Aug 3 - Sun Aug 31
Event by Team

This August join us on tonebase for the Debussy Challenge!

It's Debussy's Birthday Month! (August 22nd).
Whether you're discovering Debussy for the first time or diving deeper into his shimmering sound world, this is your chance to learn a complete piece in just four weeks — with the support of our vibrant community and a final showcase to celebrate your progress.

📅 Starts August 4th - September 1st

Each week there will be a different challenge posted, but in general we are focusing on these two things:
✅ Choose your own Debussy piece
🎥 Submit a final video performance

Let’s explore color, nuance, and imagination — one practice session at a time.

I don't think there are any level-appropriate Debussy pieces for me, so I'll enjoy watching/listening from the sidelines. I hope everyone has a fun month of music making!!

There might be some, actually! Have a look at these:

      From Children’s Corner:
      2. Jimbo’s Lullaby
      5. The Little Shepherd
      Individual works:
      The Little Nigar
      Élégie

Maybe a section of a piece where you can still get to experience the Debussy world. 😊

thanks so much for the ideas. I’m just recovered from a finger injury, and we’re being super careful with repertoire choices. I hadn’t even mentioned this challenge to my teacher because I’d forgotten about The Little Shepherd, so I’ll ask him this week.

that’s a good idea. I’ll give some thought to it. Thanks.

I’m signing up but may not make it to the end.

I’m signing up, but I’m still actively looking for a piece. I have never played Debussy before. Actually, I have tried a couple of times to learn something, but always felt some kind of revulsion, which is funny, because I can quite enjoy his music when listening. So, it will be a major breakthrough if I manage to persist and endure this month 😂

a couple of years ago my son was given Dr. Gradus ad Parnassum by a teacher (a very short-lived relationship!), and he disliked it greatly….so he “fixed” it by re-writing and re-harmonizing it! He never told her that he’d done that, but it was source of amusement for him. 😄

So at the time he "fixed" the piece, he wasn't ready to appreciate playing Debussy (even though he did enjoy listening to certain pieces), but now he is much better equipped and enjoying the pieces that his current teacher is curating for him. I hope you have the same experience!

Yes, that's what happens when you have a bright and slightly rebellious teenager! ... And a teacher who just didn't connect with him. He's had his current teacher for 2 years, and he is only now requesting (but not demanding) thatThurmond play Debussy, and picking particular pieces that can ease him into that sound world.

Trying Passepied from suite bergamasque. It’s a bit long though not sure I’ll be able to fit it in my schedule 😬

I’ve been ( slowly and not consistently ) working on children’s corner and I’m on serenade of the doll.  IF I can stay consistent then perhaps I’ll have this one close to finished and polished
