David A - Brahms Opus 117 No. 2 Intermezzo in B-Flat Minor

Still very much a work in progress, which seemed appropriate for this practice discussion group. Working casually on all three of the Opus 117 and this is the first one that is together enough to show. Still sounds a bit too busy and 'notey' for my taste, rather than serene and I'm not thrilled with the unsubtle dynamic range as well. These may be in part due to using my phone to record rather than a mic. Memorization is far more difficult now than it used to be, but I'm working on it.

Also in the mix at the moment, although won't be posting them any time soon, especially with work and holiday time constraints.

the very popular Brahms Opus 118 No. 2 in A Major
Beethoven Opus 110
Bach Prelude and Fugue in B-Flat Minor (Bk 1)
Haydn Andante and Variations in F-Minor

  • Sorry for the late reply! I was sick over the holidays and not checking in. So glad you started a practice diary. I thought this sounded great--very, very solid, and I'm excited to hear where you take it next. I liked your dynamics, and you highlighted some points with real passion.  I think there is a lot of contained passion in this opus. Looking forward to more videos when you're ready :-)

  • David Alpern Excellent playing on the Brahms 117/2 David! Such a fantastic piece to savor and continually improve. I really like it but you might find it even better if you slow the tempo a little bit in certain places...allow us to feel the painful emotions and allow the ear to savor all of the sonorities of this masterpiece.
