Week THREE: Share your love! (Watch Party is next week!)

Hello and welcome to the WEEK THREE Main Thread for this challenge! 🤩

Alright everyone - this is the thread where we'll all be posting our daily updates.

Make sure you've read the rules before replying (<- click)

Twice a week between February 6 - 13 I hope to be reading your daily updates in this very thread right here!

Here is this week's assignment!

Because the WATCH PARTY is next week, February 14th at 11am PT let's do the following this week!

1. OVERALL GOAL: Record your piece!

2. OPTIONAL: say a few words about why you choose your piece, and what you love so much about it BEFORE or AFTER you play! (Before is nice, because then we can listen with a guided imagination through your words!) You can submit two videos (one of your words and one of the music) I will then put them together into ONE video.

3. OPTIONAL: Record your piece at least TWICE! Why? Because we want you to submit your favorite recording, and tell us why you choose the one that you did. Was it because of technical reasons? Musical ones? It is important to practice evaluating your work through words!

I haven’t been able to post more individual variations last week as planned. Here I’m posting the complete piece, however imperfect, just in case I don’t have time to record again. I think I played more musically this time than most, although it’s so so so hard to keep it stumble-free. through the 7 minutes which is the longest I’ve ever recorded at TB. I hope nevertheless this still does enough justice to the brilliance of this composition, and that we may give Czerny more of a hearing as a composer,

Ching Lee Goh very glittery!  I enjoyed your performance very much.  To be honest I had always enjoyed Czerny, even his etudes.

    • Alice Lin thank you! I did beginner Czerny exercises as a kid and sadly didn't advance to doing his etudes. They are lovely too.

I completely underestimated the difficulty of BWV999. I'm not ready to record a decent video for this party watch. I'll keep working on it, and hope it will be ready for the next challenge or community concert.

  • Here's my Shostakovich's op87 no7 Fugue recording for the day https://youtu.be/VJK-uqo9MJI

A bit unfortunate that the sound of the final notes got cut off early at the end. Still shaky in places and struggled to keep my mind focus through the entire piece. It's the best I can do today and, after so many takes, now I have to give my brain some rest 😅

I was hoping to post an update earlier but working out fingering for the last 1/4 was harder than I had anticipated, and then life happened. If I have enough energy tomorrow I may try another round of recording.

This piece, to me, is the sound of an innocent joy - like a child wandering through a happy dreamland - light shimmering, sometimes floating, and then soaring into the sky at its highest moment. I first heard this piece on a CD I had to study for music subject in school, felt in love with it then, and again now 28 years later.

Being a fugue is always challenging to play the interwoven voices, and working out the fingering took a lot of time (and the score doesn't provide any). But once that's worked out I find it's easy to get lost in the lovely sound of the piece and it's hard to feel bored practising it.

I hope you enjoy it 🙂

    • Finally got my post unblocked!!!

It has been most upsetting to be unable to participate in the forum activities esp on the last leg of the challenge while waiting for someone to review the post (all interaction functions were taken away while that was happening).

Anyway, I'm glad it's now resolved - now I can share my recording and hit that "like" to all your wonderful performances!

Priya Viseskul This music is like sunlight shimmering on a lake, with little fishes jumping playfully out of the water - your playing is so beautiful and light. I'm glad we were finally able to hear it! I'm sorry to hear that it was blocked for some reason (probably a glitch!).

    • Priya Viseskul This was delightful! I agree with your take on this piece — it may be the happiest fugue ever written. (It’s on my “bucket list” of works I hope eventually to be able to play.) And you play it with such wonderful articulation and a clear, bell-like tone that suits it perfectly. Really a delight to watch and hear — thanks!

Priya Viseskul absolutely stunning! You’ve inspired me. BTW, I too have been muzzled for several days while a post was “pending review”. I gather that something triggered an automated spam detection system.

    Hi!!

I know I haven't been uploading videos. I've been preparing new pieces for competitions :)

But... I leave you with one of the pieces that makes me just love music :) One of the many.

    Hope you enjoy!!
