Week THREE: Share your love! (Watch Party is next week!)

Hello and welcome to the WEEK THREE Main Thread for this challenge! 🤩

Alright everyone - this is the thread where we'll all be posting our daily updates.

Make sure you've read the rules before replying (<- click)

Twice a week between February 6 - 13 I hope to be reading your daily updates in this very thread right here!

Here is this week's assignment!

Because the WATCH PARTY is next week, February 14th at 11am PT let's do the following this week!

1. OVERALL GOAL: Record your piece!

2. OPTIONAL: say a few words about why you choose your piece, and what you love so much about it BEFORE or AFTER you play! (Before is nice, because then we can listen with a guided imagination through your words!) You can submit two videos (one of your words and one of the music) I will then put them together into ONE video.

3. OPTIONAL: Record your piece at least TWICE! Why? Because we want you to submit your favorite recording, and tell us why you choose the one that you did. Was it because of technical reasons? Musical ones? It is important to practice evaluating your work through words!

Submitting my 2nd video of Czerny which I think sounds smoother than the 1st, though not without slips.  Thanks to TB for this virtual challenge as it suits those like me from an Asian time zone. Also, I suspect I might crash from nerves if I were to play it in a live TB concert -  but I’m willing to try as doing is part of the curing,  time zone permitting, Thank you for everyone’s encouraging comments, and looking forward to hearing your submissions!

    • Ching Lee Goh Wow Ching Lee I loved hearing you play! I never heard of this piece until you shared it first a few days ago and it's great that you introduced it to us. This second recording is even better. You should be proud of your performance, it was radiant and exuberant! Thank you!

Here is my final recording of Mozart Piano Concerto no. 23, 2nd movement transcription by Carl Reinecke.  I made several recordings which I thought were progressively improving but in the end, went with an earlier recording which sounds more fresh and less tired than some of the others I made. I’m not sure recording late at night is always the best idea!

I find sometimes that I play pieces and through practising them, come to love them but this is an example of a piece that I heard and loved for many years and then eventually decided to learn to play. I love the long melancholic lines and supporting sympathetic orchestral passages. It’s written in F sharp minor which I think is quite a tragic sounding key. I was reminded recently of a quote that seems to sum up this piece for me which is “If it were not for hopes then the heart would break”. I hope you enjoy it. https://youtu.be/XLvAzUYehwQ

    • Hazel Beautiful playing! Mozart is such a master of the minor keys, when he dares to unlock that door. Gorgeous music!
