  • Hello Ben - the quiz returned me as a 9, though I think I may be closer to an 8. I have struggled with Chopin’s 1st Ballade and his Scherzo no 2, but strangely could play through the Grand Polonaise Brilliante which I understood to be a more demanding work. I wonder if there’s an explanation for this…

At the moment, I have a few decent Liszt transcriptions in my repertoire - Widmung, Gretchen am Spinnrade, and Rigoletto Paraphrase (bar the descending chromatic 6ths), and I also completed all 3 movements of the Brahms Sonata for Piano /Cello - are these level 8 or 9:repertoire?

Going by your system it has taken me 4 years to progress from Level 6 to where I am today (after a 20:year hiatus from the piano). At this rate, do you think I could get to Level. 10 in 1-2 years? I’m curious about theories on the learning effectiveness of piano  at a later age.  Can someone after 40 reach Level 12 with 10:years of intensive study?  I’m assuming conservatories don’t admit mature students, and perhaps this answers my own question…

Would be great to hear your thoughts and thank you so much for all the great work you have done for TB and us!

    Hi there.

i am brand new member to tone base having signed up for a year.

i have been assessed as Level 9 and I think that is a little high for me.

i learned in my youth on Piano Accordion and certainly reached a Level 9 there but my LH is at a very low level so a good example is Chopin Ballad 1.

i believe I can cope with most of it in myRH but my LH is no where near the requirement.

so, this is my first forum entry and perhaps I should be directed to another forum - but hey, I have just started.
