Kirill’s practice diary

Today I begin this diary to track the progress of full rebuild of my piano technique that lead to an injury of my right hand.

I started to play the piano three years ago when I was 30. I’ve played  the guitar for twenty years. My hands are big and left hand is very good developed thanks to guitar practice. This helped me overcame difficulties of beginner pieces without proper impact on technique. I had several teachers but they seemed fail to notice that my right hand not moving too much (rotation, in and out movement etc). As the result, after working on ABRSM Grade 4 Precetti’s Presto piece and Czerny’s op.299 no 1, my right hand’s wrist muscle is injured.

The good news is that there is Robert Durso course about fundamentals of Taubman approach. After watching it and applying the principles I don’t feel pain after short practice.

It’s day 2.

  • 30 minutes. I played C major scale and arpeggio hands separately and hands together applying rotation and in-and-out movements. Tempo 100 bpm, in eight’s notes.  I didn’t feel pain and sound of scales was much better with proper technique.

  • 20 minutes. watched a Durso’s lesson on octaves

  • 30 minutes. practiced Czerny op. 299 no 1 with rotation and adjustments in in-movement to D flat. It feels amazing and sounds much better. Practiced Czerny small etude no 1. Rotation is absolute killer here to G and to F in the right hand

  • 30 minutes. ABRSM Grade 4 Precetti’s Presto page 1. Working on RH rotation and in-out movements. Observing great accuracy increase and abscence of pain
  • 30 minutes

Czerny op. 299 no 1. Working on RH rotation and in-out movements. Around 90-100 bpm. Good accuracy and tremendous increase in sound quality. Truly forte in RH.

BWV 772 No. 1. Around 130 bpm. Applying RH rotation and rehearse new fingering on trills. With new fingerings I don't need to twist right wrist and it feels much better.

No fatigue after intence 30 minutes workout. Wow!
