Alicia de Larrocha and Iberia

Hey everyone,

I'm super excited to share the latest tonebase YouTube video! This one is about Albéniz's masterwork "Iberia" - the story behind its composition, the pianists who brought it to life, and how Alicia de Larrocha made it immortal.

This was such a fun video to put together. It's also been super fun reading the comments of suggestions for other recordings of this marvelous piece. What are your favorites?

Hope you enjoy and as always, let me know what you think!

Robert

  • Thanks for that great video!

I'd always avoided Iberia because of its reputation for extreme difficulty.  But I looked at Henle's difficulty rating for the various pieces, and some of them are level 7, which isn't so scary.  They give a 7 to the Chopin C minor Nocturne, which I've played -- it is certainly difficult, but not impossible for me.  (Right now I'm foolishly working on the Chopin Barcarolle, which Henle says is 8, and it feels an order of magnitude harder than the Nocturne, so much so that at times I feel like giving up.)

So I may go ahead and try Rondeña some day.  There's a wonderful YouTube video (with score) of Alicia de Larrocha playing it that is quite inspiring.

Mark Alexander Thanks for your comment! I think Rondeña is a great starting point for this set. Best of luck with it!

Robert, you give Tonebase a lot of credibility.

    • Roger Ward I do think that Tonebase’s credibility is significant anyway and draws from many sources, but I also agree with you that Robert Fleitz contributes to it consistently, beautifully and refreshingly! 🙂 This “Iberia” portrait is one I am especially looking forward to. I have only truly learned “Evocación” so far (gorgeous music!) but have fooled around with several other pieces, including - when I was young and stupid - “Triana”, and - when I was significantly older but no less stupid - “Málaga”.

Alexander Weymann I was once young and did stupid things too.  I am now older and do less stupid things!

I see you are in Columbus.  I am a bit north of Cincinnati.  Have you considered going to the Tonebase Piano Camp at Adamant Music School in Vermont?  I went last year, and it was outstanding.  I am going again.  It is one of the brighter things I have done.

    • Roger Ward I already signed up for Adamant weeks ago and will indeed be going! It’s my first time and I am very much looking forward to it.
