“A Gate to Contemporary Music: how to learn, memorize and practice”

Piano pieces written in the 20th and 21st century are very intriguing for many pianists and yet tend to come across as very obscure and difficult to learn, play and memorize. When we approach such pieces, we tend to apply what are familiar patterns in order to recognize and organize the sound on the score. And yet, it is precisely because we approach new music in the same way we would approach music written in the previous centuries that new music is more difficult to learn.
Contemporary poetics uses a vast variety of languages: each composer seems to have developed a peculiar style and composition process.
This requires us to be able to learn, investigate, and get familiar with that language in order to proper interpret these piano pieces and contemporary music in general.
In this Livestream, we will first look at how composers codified new languages. Then we will look at a few strategies that will help you learn and memorize this type of music.
At the end, I will suggest a few ways you can practice and perform any type of piano piece written in non-tonal language.
