General Live Stream Suggestions! (Megathread)
Hi everyone!
This is Dominic, head of piano live at tonebase!
Let's use this thread as a place for any general live stream suggestions you might have that don't warrant an entirely new thread.
Examples may include:
- topics we should cover in future live streams
- new live stream format ideas
- people we should try to bring on as guests
- anything else you would like to see on tonebase LIVE!
If you'd rather start a new thread for an individual person or topic suggestion, feel free to do that too!
We will use this thread as a place to centralize suggestions, but feel free to suggested these in individual threads, if you prefer.

It would be great to have later live streams for a higher participation rate. I get the time zones present a problem. It's great to be able to view after the fact, but I really enjoyed engagement on a higher level when viewing live. As far as topics - pedagogy, performance anxiety, physiology and mental affects of aging on the pianist... just a few thoughts... Not quite sure how to articulate the last. I know at 50 I know it is harder to memorize and maintain focus. My partner feels in his mid-40s he is past his "peak" (I do not agree - he played Beethoven 109 and Bach's Italian Concerto for his BM recital), but the effects of middle age are definitely there - if that makes sense. Thanks for reading!

How about an interview with someone like Steve Brady or Jorge Amman - international level concert tuners and tech - covering what they are trying to achieve with concert tunings and voicing ( instrument prep) the relationship and understandings between a pianist and their tech and, in particular, what techs wish pianists understood about the inner workings of their instrument and how to talk the same language - the language of tone and touch.
Another series could be about tunings and temperament and in particular how composers in the past chose certain temperaments and keys to work in to highlight particular emotional affects or dramatic tensions in their compositions. What are we not hearing now and how should this awareness of these past practices inform our interpretations and performances today? This is different from but linked to a discussion on early instruments.

marina I just noticed your suggestion about tuning and temperament. I鈥檓 interested too! In my former harpsichord life I spent a lot of time learning to tune my instrument in various historical temperaments. Now that I鈥檓 working on the piano, my tech is also tuning in various Well Temperaments suited to literature in the 19th century. I鈥檇 love to hear an overview of what people are doing out in the professional world of music (if anything).

Hey marina - great suggestion, re: tuning and temperament. Definitely a topic pianists SHOULD know more about, but tend to avoid. Dominic Cheli and I will add this to our topic bank and look forward to producing something on the subject in the future, perhaps with one of the technicians you mentioned!

Hey Ben Laude and Dominic Cheli ! Something really interesting for intermediated/advanced learners - but not shortly before professionals
- would be the topic interpretation. One very interesting lesson was Seymour Bernstein's video about Chopin's Prelude in E minor op. 28 No. 4. This is a piece that really needs a big understanding about how much can you bring your own interpretation into the piece without changing what Chopin wanted to be played. Are there any rules by music eras, compositors or something like that? Or is this completely free for every piano interpret? I'm not sure if this would be something interesting for the average user of Tonebase. Just an idea, that would be great for me

I have a little question/suggestion, but I'm not sure if anyone has asked about this before. Would it be possible that when we replay livestream events, the chat during the live streams can be saved to be replayed or shown on the side bar? Since I found that there are always a lot of interesting and informative discussions going on in the chat during the livestream. Thanks!

Grace and Denise my apologies for the delayed reply! I totally agree, and have sent the question to our product team to see if we can't engineer things so the chat is preserved. My hunch is that it's an issue with Vimeo's functionality, but the chat is saved internally in the backend, so maybe there is can remain. I will keep y'all updated!

Can you do a livestream workshop on Prelude and Fugue in D minor BWV 851 by Bach and another one on Sonate Op. 10 No. 2 by Beethoven?

It would be really useful with the live-streams to have a basic time index posted after the event so you can flick to what interests you most without having to start from the beginning. Some take quite a while to really get going. Martin鈥檚 one today took about 15 minutes to actually move on from greeting to content. I watched 40 min and then gave up because ( to me, a tech novice ) it got quite geeky and completely lost me as he responded to quite specialised questions before addressing the basics. I鈥檒l come back to it later and try again. Martins enthusiasm is really endearing!

Good points. I would like to know what recording equipment I need to buy along with any recommended makes of equipment. Are people using their phones/tablets to record? I have never recorded anything on my 'phone. I can't recall recording anything on computer for a very long time. What software is recommended? I did a Sound Engineering course about forty years ago when we used tape albeit computerisation was starting to happen along with synthesisers!
I clicked on the new 'Feedback' button in order to send something about the above and you have to know how to do a recording because that's the method for sending in the Feedback.

marina I took the liberty of sending your comment to Andrew. I just spoke with him the other day, and we're definitely planning on more productions soon. And, before a full scale production, we'll certainly have him on for another livestream.

I am in Sydney so it basically means that I never get to watch the streaming sessions live. That said, I love everything that has been covered and I am learning such a great deal from Dominic and the guest teachers! I would love it if we can put on Rachmaninoff Etudes (since we have had the Chopin Etudes), Scriabin Sonatas, Shostakovich Prelude and Fugues. [ Sorry I seem to have caught the Russian bug after the Picture at an Exhibition! :) ] Many thanks for everything that you guys to do bring Music to us ! x

Hi, one of my personal favorite live streams was Rodolfo Leone on the c minor Beethoven variations. I watched multiple times while learning that piece and it was very useful having a walkthrough like that. Would love to see more live streams on Beethoven with him/you.
Your Bach French Suite No. 5 live stream was another favorite. My personal challenge over the last few months has been working through the Goldberg variations and while I know the scope of that is probably too large for a live stream, I'm particularly interested in techniques for dealing with the "2 manual" variations such as 5,8,11,14,17,etc. which give me the most trouble. Perhaps there is a piece of smaller scope where you could address how to handle cross-overs between hands playing so close together.
Keep the up the great work! I'm a new member but love everything you've been doing in the live streams.

Incidentally, both Dominic Cheli and I play the Goldbergs, and we even spoke recently about maybe teaming up to present them. I like your idea of thematizing them by their form and technical challenges. Maybe we group all the double manual hand crossing variations together for one stream, all the canons for another stream, and all the rest (which are mostly style pieces - like 4, 7, 10, 13, 16, etc) for a third stream. I'm thinking out loud...
Also, I should mention that when I first looked at the score of some of those hand crossing variations I was convinced they were impossible. But, the counterpoint is so ingenious that you really can find fairly comfortable ways to avoid head-on collisions...

Thanks for letting us know about what you are looking for in terms of content - we will definitely feature the Goldbergs at some point in the future - I am sure Ben Laude will agree some of these variations do have some "tricks" to help conquer them ;)
