General Live Stream Suggestions! (Megathread)

Hi everyone!

This is Dominic, head of piano live at tonebase!

Let's use this thread as a place for any general live stream suggestions you might have that don't warrant an entirely new thread.

Examples may include:

  • topics we should cover in future live streams
  • new live stream format ideas
  • people we should try to bring on as guests
  • anything else you would like to see on tonebase LIVE!

If you'd rather start a new thread for an individual person or topic suggestion, feel free to do that too!

We will use this thread as a place to centralize suggestions, but feel free to suggested these in individual threads, if you prefer.

Happy posting!

Hi, one of my personal favorite live streams was Rodolfo Leone on the c minor Beethoven variations.  I watched multiple times while learning that piece and it was very useful having a walkthrough like that.  Would love to see more live streams on Beethoven with him/you.

Your Bach French Suite No. 5 live stream was another favorite.  My personal challenge over the last few months has been working through the Goldberg variations and while I know the scope of that is probably too large for a live stream, I'm particularly interested in techniques for dealing with the "2 manual" variations such as 5,8,11,14,17,etc. which give me the most trouble.  Perhaps there is a piece of smaller scope where you could address how to handle cross-overs between hands playing so close together.

Keep the up the great work!  I'm a new member but love everything you've been doing in the live streams.

Ben Laude Dominic Cheli Thank you, that would me amazing to eventually have all the variations covered in some form on tonebase.  Maybe you could invite Simone Dinnerstein as a guest. :)

  • I think a live stream devoted to sight reading would be extremely helpful. Years ago a professor of piano gave me eight tips that I have not heard from anyone else. It would be interesting to have a guest who could bring additional insight as well. They would need to demonstrate sight reading live with obscure pieces that they surely never read through before. This skill is a common weakness but is really so important! The better one can sight read, the less time it takes to learn a new piece, and of course there are many more benefits.

This probably isn't good for a stream, but I'd like to learn about harmony and structure so that when I play a piece I'm more aware of what's going on beyond the level of tone, dynamics, tempo, etc. Also, something centered around how to structure a practice session and how to set concrete goals so that you can have a sense of progression from one session to the next. Something on memorization would be super helpful, too.

    • Daniel Great suggestions Daniel! All of these are good for a stream! Tomorrow morning we actually have a livestream dealing with memorization advice, but stay tuned for the other topics!

Don鈥檛 know if this has come up before, but I would love to see a livestream on how best to practice Chopin鈥檚 base-note-two-chords left hand sequence in many of his works. Examples include Nocturne Op. 9, No. 2, Ballade No. 4, Op. 52 (main theme) or even his posthumous Waltz in A minor. Thanks. Tonebase and the livestreams are a great resource.

  • Dominic I have been thinking that it could cool to have something like 芦The composer of the month禄. Where we have in-depth looks at the composer鈥檚 style. Maybe analyse a few pieces, and learn some history that goes with it. It could go hand in hand with the community challenge, but doesn鈥檛 have to if it doesn鈥檛 fit. Maybe, if we know which composer is coming up, we can also subtmit videos for masterclass on that composer. What do you think?

Sindre Skarelven , great idea.  At some point, though, we'll likely need to return to particular composers. But it gives us a chance to learn different pieces in their repertoire.

That is a really interesting idea! I think of pianists as being concrete operational, so suggestions on how to approach (say three or so) specific pieces of music would be really interesting. We could try them out on our own, without going into the same depth as the chosen piece for the Community Challenge.

  • Hi Dominic, my suggestion for a live stream - or a lesson or even a course? - would be on "Playing from (opera) piano vocal scores (piano reductions)". I think this topic correlates a good deal with "sight reading" but goes far deeper: It relates to WHEN and foremost HOW to "fake" or "omit" things, since many piano reductions tend to focus bringing out every voice of the orchestra which makes them imo very hard to play from a pianistical viewpoint. It also relates to the artistry of accompanying singers. It would be just great to have a lesson form an experienced "vocal coach" (Korrepetitor). Thanks and keep up the great work at tonebase.
