For me, it was hearing the LA Phil with Esa-Pekka Salonen and Vikingur Olafsson!
They played:
Bartok: Music for Strings, Percussion and Celeste,
Bjarnason: Feast (Piano Concerto)
Sibelius: Symphony No.7
Was a VERY through provoking program of music you would not normally hear!!

Dominic Cheli finally, something I can contribute to: I recently listened to Benjamin Grosvenor play the Liszt b minor sonata, Iberia, Book 1, (Albeniz), Ravel Jeux d'eau. Prodigious pianism! I'm not a big Liszt fan, but I was on the edge of my seat. On Saturday I listened to Paul Lewis do some impressive Beethoven (Pathetique and Appassionata), along with Debussy Children's Corner (which doesn't get performed enough, IMO). But my favorite recent performance was just last night. A benefit that my friend performed in. She played Rachmaninoff Romance in A Major for six hands (!) arranged for four hands, a nice piece that I had never heard of. But to get to my favorite performance: this event also featured Jerome Lowenthal, who recently turned 90 and is sadly getting quite frail. But he played Chopin Impromptu No. 2 in F# minor with economy, poise and elegance that would have sounded impressive from any pianist at any age. I found it touching and inspirational. Incidentally, I am a fan of Vikingur Olafsson... I like his thoughtful programming. He played here at Carnegie Hall in November, but it sold out before I hear about it.

Dominic Cheli Vikingur Olafsson too - he came to our local concert hall in the Essex countryside on 11 Nov this year to play the Goldberg Variations. This was a once-in-a-lifetime concert. I had a coughing incident in one of the more delicate variations but managed to suppress it by drinking about a litre of water. The air was too dry. Someone's 'phone went off in the reprise of the Aria. Everyone around suppressed their murderous intent - probably due to the beauty of what we had just experienced and Vikingur's playing!

it was Daniil Trifonov in March and he played Tchaikovsky and a piece by Mason Bates. Pretty dramatic and inspired and all around memorable.

Last Saturday, April 30, at a church in Manhattan's Upper West Side with NYC's premier community orchestra, Camerata Notturna:

I surreptitiously took a photo while they were playing Beethoven's 9th because my older son was the principal violist. The conductor was David Chan, concertmaster of the MET Orchestra. It was glorious to hear the Choral symphony performed live!
