Ted I love Manny’s playing!  Every note is so beautifully thought out beforehand.  The guy still practices a ton every day!

  • Vikingur Ólafsson here too, playing Mozart and contemporaries from new CD in Sandvika, Norway. Lovely program, mixing virtually unheard stuff by Galuppi and others with centerpieces like the d minor fantasy and sonata in C 545. Long and really really thoroughly worked through program by this icelandic young master!

    • Ketil Grøtting I saw the same program in Vienna some months ago. Fascinating how well it works when the pieces are played one after the other without breaks. I also liked his introduction in the beginning. And how he is able to keep the different voices separated yet together when he plays. I enjoyed this concert a lot.

  •     On April 23, the Cheyenne Symphony had their last subscription concert of the season.  It started with the University of Wyoming Bel Canto Women's Chorus singing "O frondens virga" by Hidegarde von Bingen.  The Orchestra then played Jennifer Higden's "Blue Cathedral."

After intermission, the orchestra, four area choruses, and two soloists performed Brahm's "A German Requiem," in German.

The next afternoon the Symphony's second "Hausmusik" concert of the season featured the Wyoming Brass Quintet playing selections from the 16th to the 20th centuries.

        Both concerts were great.

Jeffrey Hickman It sounds wonderful! I admire Hildegarde von Bingen very much! Here is a quote you may like:

"When the words come, they are merely empty shells without the music. They live as they are sung, for the words are the body and the music the spirit.”

  • The Longmont Symphony Orchestra (Elliot Moore) here in in Colorado has been having some fantastic concerts lately.  Latest one was The Firebird Suite (Stravinsky), Ancient Echoes (Michael Udow), Symphony #1 (Brahms).  He also did a series of the Beethoven Symphonies (5,6,7).  He played the Ukrainian National Anthem in one of the concerts.

I, very recently, had the wonderful opportunity to hear Dominic Cheli play in San Diego, CA. I don't know from where Dominic gets his energy. He traveled down from LA after a full day's work, and then played  a beautiful, demanding concert including:

Suite No 3 for the Left Hand by Erwin Schulhoff

Etude in A Minor by H. Leslie Adams

Romanze in A Minor Opus 21 No. 1 by Clara Schumann

Intermezzo Opus 118 No. 2 by Johannes Brahms

Soirees de Vienne No. 6 (Sophie Center Version) by Liszt/Schubert

Pictures at an Exhibition by Modest Mussorgsky

The venue (Kinsella Library in La Jolla) had two beautiful Yamaha grand pianos. One is ebony, the other bright red. The bright red one is owned by Sir Elton John. Dominic played on the ebony one until the encore, when he played a movement for a Prokofiev piano sonata (which had a significant "Rock and Roll" feel to it) on the Elton's piano. What a great concert!

Vermont Symphony Orchestra with Stephen Hough playing Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto #3. I was so tired after that from the exhilaration as well as from trying to follow Hough’s hands as I was 3 rows away from him.

Adena Franz Very fun! Years ago I attended a Master Class by Stephen Hough. He was excellent - skilled, personable and insightful. Did you know that Stephen Hough is talented painter and an author?

      His books:

The Bible as Prayer: A Handbook for Lectio Divina (2007)

      by Stephen Hough

      The Final Retreat (2018)

      by Stephen Hough

Rough Ideas: Reflections on Music and More (2020)
