TWI sign up for: Improvising A Simple ABA Piece With Jeremy Siskind

Anyone can improvise! When classical pianists hear the word "Improvisation," they often think of learning fancy jazz scales or studying the rule of the octave. But improvisation doesn't have to be intimidating! In this two-week intensive, pianist Jeremy Siskind will demonstrate how to improvise a twenty-four measure ABA tune without being a jazz or historical improv genius. Topics covered will include standard chord progressions, left-hand patterns, use of arpeggios, adding color using non-chord tones, and exercises for two-handed coordination.

Pianists of all levels are welcome.

Hi Dominic, I'm not able to participate in this intensive. Will it be made available for viewing?

Dominic Cheli while recognizing that this would be really good for me, the prospect is intimidating as I am completely “note bound” in terms of relying on a score. The idea of improvising scares me 😱. Thinking about it…  Have just completed RCMT grade 8 theory - is that sufficient knowledge for this course?

Gillian I have just signed up for this. I am at grade 6 classical piano but love noodling around and squeezing the creative juices. If you are as you say note bound and scared by the thought of improv. Then this has to be perfect for your personal musical development. Stretch into the new and unknown and grow with new found confidence. Seems to me you’re the perfect candidate. Hope you join and I hope you get great results. 😀🎶🎶🎶

The course description indicates that it is open to pianists of all levels. I am at around Level 2 but have previous music training on other instruments. Would this course still be appropriate for such a beginner student of the piano?

  • How does this course work? I see that there is an optional sign in via Zoom at 1:30 pm PT on April 26, but no other times are listed. I am quite interested in improving my improv-ing :)

    • carokul. 519 Basically each week there will be one assignment, featuring a pre-recorded video from Jeremy, and written description. You will then work on the assignment, and post your progress on the forums! The zoom check in session is for people to join and ask any questions that might have arisen during the work on the assignments!

  • Is this a Zoom class? If so, what are the times? And are the classes held once a week or once a day or some other interval? Thank you! I'm looking forward to seeing how these concepts can be applied to hymn improv!

  • Hi Dominic, I submitted my email on the sign-up page. Is that all I need to do to register?

    • It is indeed strange that there were so few details about this course. It is also surprising that my signup for the course was never confirmed (in a clear manner).

    • Dominic Cheli Dominic, I got two emails. One says that I am in group 1 and the other one says that I am in group 3. Which one am I in, please. I do not want to sound overly critical but the whole sign up and follow up process has not worked very well.

    • Dominic Cheli Dominic, is there an option to download the material that Jeremy is talking about in the video or we need to make notes when watching the videos?

      Thank you,

      Michael

Please take notes while watching the video and pay attention to the bullet points that are listed under the assignment! Those are bullet points that Jeremy has listed for us to consider/pay attention to. Unfortunately you can't download the video as a file, but it will be in its YouTube link format for viewing anytime!

Just submitted my sign up on the AM of the 17th, hope it's not too late.  Very interested in this topic. Work commitments have me overextended until April 19th but looks like I could still view the sessions and then maybe post something towards the latter part of the workshop.  Even if it's too late for me to post, I'll observe and do the lessons myself, with great interest.  Thanks

Sorry but I am confused. I signed up for this. I see that the assignments have been published alongside groups. How do you know which group you are aligned to etc?
