  • Hi everyone,

Hopefully I'm not too late but I'd like to submit a short piece by Liszt for the Halloween Concert tomorrow (its 3'30 mins in duration) - Canzone from the Years of Pilgrimage. Its based on a theme from a Rossini's Othello, but still sounds a bit spooky I think!

    • Derek McConville beautifully played, and so well chosen! I've heard that piece performed many times but never quite realized how eerie it is, and how suitable for Halloween.

  • Friends, I am so sorry, but I will not be able to play today. I had blocked my afternoon a long time ago so I would be able to participate in this concert, but especially for a physician, our best-laid plans only ever go so far - and this morning, I learned that an emergent obligation will require me to be busy at work nonstop all day. I told Dominic that I will try to record my two pieces and submit them later, if there's still any interest. I hope you all will have a great concert today; wish I could be there!

    • Gail Starr , Juan Carlos Olite - thank you for voicing interest in still hearing me play my little selection of pieces for Hallowe’en, even though it admittedly is pretty lame to present them 10 days after the concert. That said, here is one:

“Minuit passe” – Midnight Passes – by Abel Decaux is the first of his four piano pieces called “Clairs de lune”. You can hear the twelve somber strokes of the bell at midnight in the sub-bass register throughout the piece. There is a short prose poem by the painter Louis de Lutèce inscribed above the score which I have translated for you here:

Piano... piano... pianissimo… The moon, white, glides silently in space. Chimneys, attics, gables, ridges: tenebrous silhouettes on a field of somber azure… Motionless phantoms… Emaciated carcass of a mewling cat… Grimacing profile of a monstrous gothic gargoyle… Wavering flight of the bat… Pallid brightness in the sky… Mysterious shadow on the ground… Abracadabraing dreams and nightmares… Nocturnal hauntings…

                  Piano… piano… pianissimo…

    • Alexander Weymann Bravo Alexander! I love picture you’re painting with this piece. You bring out all those very cool and effect full sounds with so much tension, creating a very exciting scenery for the listener. And a great storyline threw out the twelve strokes... Well done!
